Red lips 101

Red Lipstick.JPGAfter the last vignette on red lipsticks, I got a tonne of mails asking if there was a ‘proper way’ of applying the stuff, ‘coz it seems that the normal swirl-dab-go approach doesn’t work here. Yes, red lipstick takes much more effort to put on – its like draping an Oscar de la Renta gown vis-a-vis throwing on your fave pair of Gap jeans. But the results are so worth it…

Step 1: Before putting on the lipstick, exfoliate your lips to get rid of all the flaky, chappy bits. Dab on a bit of lip balm, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rub it off with a soft toothbrush. Follow with a lip primer (I vouch for MAC Prep + Prime Lips) to create a smooth base that will hold the colour.

Step 2: Apply a thin layer of foundation – this will neutralise your lip colour, allowing the true hue of the lipstick to come alive sans any distortion. Once the foundation dries, add a layer of face powder, which will help set the lipstick so it will last longer.

Step 3: Lightly trace the shape of your lips with a pencil that matches your lipstick, keeping within your natural lip line. If you can’t find an exact match, go a tad lighter, but never, ever darker.

Step 4: Apply a thin coat of lipstick, blot, apply a second coat, and you are done!

Happy B’day :)

In the early 1900s, there was a French chemist called Eugene Schueller who started a hair-dye business from his tiny apartment. He named it L’Aureale – after the halo-like hairstyle that ruled the fashion world at that time. That little company is now a mega, global giant called L’Oreal, and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

In India, this special year is being commemorated with the inauguration of Beautiful Beginnings, an initiative providing training in beauty services to under privileged girls. It will provide beauty service training to 200 poor urban girls (school drop-outs) each year in Mumbai and Pune. As a result these girls either become employable in existing beauty salons or are able to set up their own small beauty salons. They become economically secure and get more freedom to balance their family duties. We think its a lovely thought and hope the brand celebrated many more anniversaries!!

Aaaahhhhh!!!!

Three of the most hauntingly beautiful perfume descriptions I have ever come across… all are from Laren Stover’s The Bombshell Manual of Style:

Nuit de Noel by Caron: Imagine seeing Paris on a snowy, wintry night from the top of the Eiffel Tower while sipping champagne. Created in 1922, this warming, heartful scent pays homage to the roaring twenties with an effect so uplifting it’s dizzying.

L’Heure Bleue by Guerlain: A summer evening scent that spans a poetic range of romantic emotions, this is the fragrance to wear when falling in love. Eternally fresh, woodsy, powdery and feminine with a spicy heart of clove, it adores filmy, gauzy, velvety blue, violet and periwinkle anything. Jacques Guerlain is said to have been moved by the twilight hour when the sky has lost its sun but has not yet found its stars.

Femme by Rochas: A feminine, warm, embracing, sweater-girl scent. Perfect for intimate affairs in small rooms, in front of fireplaces, French restaurants. Ideal for evening tweeds; snug cashmere twinsets in taupe, ivory, peach and black; dark, clingy knits and cocktail dresses. Femme adores plunging necklines which are best with an understated perfume that’s a little woodsy, soft and complex

Must buy: Neutrogena Wave

Picture 1This vibrating cleanser is def going to shake up the way you wash your face. Gentle vibrations massage skin and open pores, so cool foam can clean ten times deeper than traditional cleansers, literally vacuuming out all traces of dirt, oil and makeup. At the same time, the softly textured pads sweep away dead cells, leaving skin smoother and more radiant. And its super-easy to use: Just attach a disposable foaming pad to the Wave, add a little warm water and press the power-on button. And yup, its available at Neutrogena stores across the country (for Rs. 649), so you dont have to wait for your next trip abroad!!
