The Lazy Girls’ Guide to Good Skin

You know how our skin needs the whole wash-scrub-moisturise routine every day? And you also know how easy it is to fall off the bandwagon, right? A couple of excruciatingly late nights at work, falling asleep on the couch after a rocking party, getting sick and stuck in bed or just plain laziness… endless ways to derail our skincare regime, leaving the complexion looking lacklustre and blemish-prone. So, how to counter the damage and get back on track? The easiest and most effective method is to reach for a chemical exfoliant, which will give your skin a refreshing kickstart and rid it of the accumulated grime, toxins and dead cells.

And don’t let the name scare you – chemical exfoliators can actually be more gentle than manual scrubs. The latter contain “granules” or “beads” – usually crushed seeds, polymer balls, micro crystals etc, which exfoliate via manual friction, i.e., literally scrubbing your face with the product. Harsh handed application, jagged granules or an ultra-abrasive formula can cause microscopic tears on the skin’s surface, causing scarring and leaving the complexion vulnerable to toxins and infections.

Chemical scrubs, on the other hand, contain topical bio-engineered ingredients that work by dissolving or loosening the glue-like substance that holds together dead skin cells. There is no physical friction – you leave on the scrub for a few minutes and then wash it off, almost like a face mask. The ingredients usually take the form of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) or fruit enzymes, which are perfectly safe and non-irritating when applied for the right amount of time. Lower strengths largely only exfoliate, while higher strengths have added anti-aging, acne control and other skin conditioning benefits. Some good picks:

I’ll be there for you…

This is for everyone who belongs to the international cult called Friends. If, like me, you continue to watch endless reruns of the TV series that ended six years ago yet remains a part of our lives, nothing can stop you from rushing out and pick up The Debut. Jennifer Aniston’s (actually Jennifer Anastassakis but now that’s clearly a lesson in ancient history) maiden fragrance promises to envelope you in the same kind of uplifting, cheery, comforting hug that was the hallmark of Rachel, modern-day sitcom history’s  sometimes ditzy and all-time favourite blonde who set trends, taught you the value of friendship and loyalty, and made you smile, laugh, cry and whoop aloud for ten years. The perfume itself is a fruity-floral, whose blooming jasmine, citrus notes and a sensual musk base evoke long sunny days at the beach and balmy summer evenings. “I wanted this fragrance to be a personal library of scent memories. For example, my love of Night Blooming Jasmine has lasted a lifetime. Growing up in California, I distinctly remember the scent of the Jasmine on summer evenings,” explains Aniston adding that, “I consider the scent of the ocean to be one of life’s most uplifting sensual experiences. No aroma is quite so purifying, humbling and exhilarating. The combination of the salty air and tropical oils reminds me of long sunny days on the beach – pure happiness.”

Men Take Note: Bleu de Chanel

Chanel has finally announced the much-awaited new fragrance for men: Named Bleu de Chanel, this is the brand’s first major male fragrance since 2004’s Allure Homme Sport and its first men’s masterbrand since 1990’s Egoïste. The name itself harks back to Le Bleu de Chanel, which was introduced by Chanel in 1931. The modern-day release is a woody aromatic, with top notes of grapefruit, peppermint, pink pepper, nutmeg and ginger; a heart of dry cedar and jasmine, and a drydown of vetiver, patchouli and frankincense. Jacques Polge, the legendary in-house perfumer calls it a very fresh, spicy and sexy scent… an impression that’s echoed by Martin Scorsese who has directed French actor Gaspard Ulliel and model Ingrid Schram in the advertising spot that relates the story of a man who tries to conquer the heart of a young woman to the beat of She Said Yeah by the Rolling Stones. Definitely one to watch out for!

Dior Discovery

The limited edition Dior Tailleur Bar Eyeshadow Palette is an exquisite reworking of the designer’s iconic Bar jacket from the New Look collection of 1947 – and this time, you don’t need a minuscule waist to carry it off!!

Convertible Hair

Love convertibles, hate what they do to your hair? The new Mercedes Benz E350 and E550 Cabriolet models have solved the problem of tangled hair by adding an Aircap, a small 2.4-inch wind deflecting device that not only cuts down on turbulence but also keeps your blow-dry in place. There’s also a new Airscarf, a weather-defying system that blows hot air at the necks of the people seated up front, literally enveloping you in a scarf-like layer of warmth so you can keep the top down even in the chilly months. Now these are cars I could fall in love with!!!!
