Lipsticks That Go The Distance

It’s the fashionista’s version of finding the Holy Grail – a lipstick that actually lasts through a night-out or an entire meeting without requiring multiple touchups, fading into oblivion or devolving into uneven patches. This weekend, I wore one of the new Burberry Beauty lipsticks (voluntary disclosure: it was bought simply because I am a sucker for gorgeous packaging) and it lasted through an entire Chinese meal (complete with soup), two drinks, multiple air kisses and four hours of almost non-stop chattering. Added bonus? It had a light, emollient texture that felt comfortable and did not even dry out my lips one bit! All of which is quite a miracle for someone whose lips can’t hold onto even the most credibly certified “long wearing” lipsticks for more than an hour. I won’t go as far as to say that the colour didn’t budge an iota – it did “gentle down” a bit, ending up at about 70% of its initial brightness at the end of the night. Which, trust me, was far more than good enough!

To give you a little more insight into Burberry Beauty while we are on the subject, the line is composed of 96 products, including foundations (a fluid and a powder), mascara, finishing powder, bronzer, lip sticks, glosses, liners and eyeshadows. To use Christopher Bailey’s words, “Burberry Beauty reflects the natural style and carefree attitude of our emblematic trench coat.” The palette is replete with decidedly British colors (“we were inspired by English skies”) and sleek packaging (square metallic cases etched with the signature plaid motif), while the make-up itself has a light texture that gives definition without being overpowering. The cases come with a magnetic clasp, which ensures that the products won’t open and spill in your handbag.

To sum it up: After spending a few days playing with the goodies, my overall impression is that (like the advert) these products are perfect for creating a flawlessly polished “no makeup” look, or one that adds colour very judiciously. Just right for summer, I would say!

Next stop: Tom Ford Beauty. Stand back for the testing.

The Short Cut: Jennifer Aniston

Stop press – Jennifer Aniston has finally ditched the signature layers and chopped her tresses into a chin-length bob! Is this going to be the start of a new hair trend, à la “The Rachel” of the Friends era?

Oscar Opulence: L’Oreal Best Actress Nominee Compact

If you ever needed more inspiration to become an Oscar-nominated actress, take a look at this: For the past couple of years, L’Oreal has been presenting each of the five Best Actress Oscar nominees with a diamond-encrusted compact by Carelle. The stunning piece is dressed with a shooting star encrusted with diamonds, vividly-hued rose de france gemstones and pink sapphires, all of which are set in 18kt rose gold-plated sterling silver. The cost? US$$3,200. This year’s editions go to Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. Personally (honestly!) I would prefer the compact to the statuette!

A Musky Muse: Narciso Rodriguez for Her

Narciso Rodriguez’s signature fragrance collection, called Narciso Rodriguez for Her, resonates with memories of the Egyptian musk he was once offered by an unforgettable woman. The initial fragrance – Her Eau de Toilette – was composed of a rare musk and a blend of floral, amber and woody pulsations, creating an elegant, subtle and translucent “sheer chypre” fragrance whose skin-on-skin sensuality that resonates mysteriously and transforms magically.

In Her Eau de Parfum, musk remains the heart and provides an acute sensuality, backed with an olfactory lacework of pink chypre, which become the true soul of the composition: A rare weave of pink floral with hints of rose and peach pulp, and soft amber and wood in pastel tones. Bathed in the voluptuous musky richness, the composition has a decadent feel of a raw silk dress caressing your skin.

And the bottle matches up to the fragrant intricacies: An exclusive and revolutionary technology has been used to lend a mysterious aura to the scent and approach the perfection of the ancient Chinese snuff bottles. Painted pale pink from within, the bottle is a reflection of modern femininity, with a light infused glow and a lustrous patina. The result: A work of unfettered elegance and modern grace, a most distinctive fragrance contained within an equally distinctive bottle, a work of precision from a true perfectionist. Definitely a modern classic worth coveting!
