L’Oreal buys Urban Decay. StriVectin and Yes To have been on the market since February 2012. Tarte Cosmetics went up for sale in July of the same year. And Perricone MD is rumoured to be on the block since May. The beauty industry’s scorecard of mergers and acquisitions seems more laden with intrigue than even the NBA basket ball teams or the Football League. It might surprise you to know that the entire world of makeup, skincare, haircare and perfumes is dominated by a few key players – all multi-billion dollar corporations with ownership over multiple major brands. Here’s how it breaks down.
The L’Oreal Group
Estée Lauder Companies
LVMH Group
Unilever
Johnson & Johnson
Procter & Gamble
Group Shiseido
Which of these surprised you the most? Is there anything I have left out? Tell me in the comments section below!

Thank you for a very informative post
Did any of these surprise you??
Well, I am not really surprised now. I did not know all of these, but I stumbled over LVMH sometime last year, and on researching I found out more and more conglomerrates of beauty and luxury products. You just listed their cosmestic companies, but they also own a lot of other products. I am still baffled by the amount of power and money they gathered though. Talk about building cartells.
Yeah, they have fingers in almost every pie. I don’t know whether that’s good or bad. On one hand, small brands get a lot of resources by being part of a cash-rich organisation. But on the other hand, there is the inevitable commercialisation and loss of artisanal elements. Now even Hermes is partly owned by LVMH… waiting to see what happens there!
LVMH also owns Fab India – just FYI or they have a stake in it…
You are right Zarina, LVMH has a stake in Fabindia. But since they was exclusively about international beauty brands, that did not fit in. But thanks for putting it down, anyway
