DIY Skincare: Roses Pack a Potent Beauty Punch

Today, my thoughts keep wandering back to roses… I have no idea why! Maybe it’s the Absolis by Patyka rose face toner that landed on my table first thing in the morning. Or the fresh batch of rose water I made last evening… the lush fragrance is still wafting through my rooms. Or the Lancôme Absolue L’Extrait that I have been road testing since last month.

Anyway, whatever the reason, I can’t help but notice that roses are everywhere in the beauty world right now. And these fragrant flowers are doing far more than just adding their charmingly feminine scent to our products: their delicate petals are also chockfull with antioxidants, which help heal skin and reduce inflammation. Plus, they have superb antiseptic and antibacterial properties, making them ideal for a number of skin problems.

Rose petals are chockfull with antioxidants, which help heal skin and reduce inflammation. Plus, they have superb antiseptic and antibacterial properties, while also being intensely hydrating

In fact, roses were a prominent element of traditional Indian, Chinese, Persian, Arabian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman medicine before making their way to European apothecaries. Which set me thinking: wouldn’t it be amazing if we could harness the therapeutic properties of this precious plant right at the source? Make its beauty benefits even more potent by adding fresh roses to the mix? So, to help you enjoy a little petal power, here is a bouquet of rose-based lotions, potions and scents. And since roses are said to banish melancholy, I hope these beauty recipes also help to chase away the mid-week blues for you!

First, some tips

  • Use the freshest flowers you can find – ideally, they should be picked on the same day.
  • Where the recipe calls for rose water, you can buy it from the market (look for organic versions) or make it yourself with these easy recipes.
  • Look for organic or pesticide-free blooms since these will be applied to your skin.

Rose Petal Body Polish

How-to: Gently rinse 1 cup rose petals to remove dust. Grind the petals as finely as possible, using mortar and pestle. Mix the ground rose petals with 1 teaspoon sea salt, 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1/4 cup buttermilk powder, 1 teaspoon cornmeal and 3-5 drops of essential rose oil. Pour everything into a food processor and process until you have a fine mixture. Add just enough olive oil to create a paste when you want to use the scrub. Store remaining mixture in a lidded container.

The science: Rose petals boost the body’s circulation, while simultaneously purifying the blood by flushing out wastes and toxins.

Did you know that one cup of rose hips has more vitamin C than 60 oranges?

Floral Bath Soak

The science: As a natural astringent, rose helps tighten pores and restore suppleness for a glowy complexion. Unlike conventional alcohol-based toners, it leaves skin feeling smooth, not dried out. Plus, the addition of glycerin and witch hazel in this recipe helps make it astringent and hydrating.

Fresh Rose Face Mask

Add 6-8 rose petals, two teaspoons rose water and one teaspoon plain yogurt; mix everything until you have a smooth paste. Apply this on your face and neck and wait for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Skin will feel super-hydrated and shall recover its lost nutrients.

The science: The natural oils found in roses help lock moisture into the skin, keeping it silky smooth. Rose is especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin because the sugars in its petals create a soothing feeling.

Deep Cleansing Face Mask

How-to: Mix 3 tablespoons of rose water with 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons of oat flour. You may prepare oat flour by grinding rolled oats in a blender, food processor, or coffee grinder. Apply this facial mask for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Your skin will be deep cleansed and feel super-supple.

The science: The naturally antibacterial rose essential oil is great for treating acne and acne-prone skin. Plus, the sugars found in rose petals add to their soothing effect, helping calm down troubled complexions.

Clinique Happy in Bloom 2013 Eau de Parfum

If there is one limited edition perfume I wait for every single year, it’s the annual issue of Clinique’s Happy in Bloom. This time the flanker combines all the fruitiness of yellow plum with the fresh-cut fragrance of lily of the valley, freesia and mimosa. Etro Rajasthan Eau de Parfum

Have you ever visited Rajasthan? Been seduced by its shimmering sands, hypnotic rhythms and bold colors on the silver screen or in a coffee table book? Haunted by it’s stories of love and loss and valor? Then you will love Etro’s new fragrance, which is inspired by the Indian desert and all its grandeur. Packaged in a stunning enamel bottle, it combines the fresh aroma of winter lemon flower with the sweetness of the young damask rose and the languor of mimosa. Added to this blend is the sensuality of amber and white musk, enlivened by a strong pink pepper bite, which gradually gives way to the delicate notes of landanum which then turns to the magnificence of sweet acacia. I don’t know how it works since many of these ingredients would never survive Rajasthan’s harsh climate but work it does. Brilliantly.

It takes a hefty dose of creativity to make an impact in today’s ultra-innovative nail art market but YSL has definitely made us stop in our tracks. The brand’s new top coats use tri-phase technology to pack three different finishes in the same bottle. How it works: the bottom is infused with glitter, the center is a sheer tinted shade, and the top is straight-up clear gloss. Simply pull the brush out of the bottle and swipe over your mani for a gradient top coat effect; or you can shake and mix all three together for an even, shimmery tinted top coat to put over your favorite colors. Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Gloss

While I would normally find it hard to justify spending $30 on a lip gloss, you could actually make me cough up double the amount for this one. That’s because there is some pretty fancy colour-adjusting technology in play here, which makes the almost-clear liquid react with the humidity of your lips to give the most perfect swipe of rosiness for your individual complexion. Plus, it’s got major hydrators to smooth and protect. Oh, and it’s totally not sticky or gloopy, which is a major bonus. In short, it’s genius!

The Body Shop Absinthe Purifying Hand Care Range

Before it was banned in the 20th century, absinthe – or the “green fairy” – was hailed for its medicinal qualities. The ancient Egyptians used it as an antiseptic remedy whilst the ancient Greeks claimed that the plant could counteract poison. Now the Body Shop has blended this intriguing ingredient into a new range of hand products that are designed to banish dry skin and bad odors, while leaving behind a fabulously fresh sensation. Use this when you want hands that are clean, refreshed, beautifully moisturized… and laced with the seductive air of danger.

Mad Men: What’s in Megan Draper’s Makeup Bag?

Ever since she shimmied and shook her way into our hearts with Zou Bisou Bisou in the last season of Mad Men, Megan Draper has captivated a legion of makeup-obsessed fans. That’s because Don Draper’s French-Canadian wife is the woman of the future. And she is the first girl on the show we can picture hanging out with in real life. Megan is intelligent, stylish, multi-talented and cooks spaghetti minus the sauce for dinner every night. She worries about her reputation at work. She talks back to Don.

And, oh yeah, there’s her makeup. “The inspiration for Megan Draper drew from a combination of Twiggy and Sophia Loren,” explains Mad Men Makeup Department Head Lana Horochowski. “We thought of French and Italian actresses who had iconic looks. Megan is a little more high fashion in her approach to makeup compared to the other girls because she’s a lot younger – their makeup stays pretty consistent.”

No wonder that men want her and women want to be her. Thankfully, becoming the infamous Mrs. Draper is rather simple with this behind-the-scenes reveal of what goes into recreating her bombshell glamour with exaggerated cat eyes and almost-nude lips (although the gap-toothed smile cannot be emulated).

Megan Draper’s Complexion

1. After prepping skin with Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream, layer on a medium-coverage foundation like L’Oreal True Match; start in the center of your face and work outwards to the jawline.

2. Sweep on Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Powder all over your face and neck with a powder brush. This will give a pretty, matte finish like Megan’s without looking flat or chalky.

3. Blend a peachy blush like Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection Rouge Blush in Evening Rose onto the apples of your cheeks for an I-just-worked-out flush.

Megan Draper’s Eye Makeup

4. The Mad Men beauty team created Megan’s signature look with a winning combination of white cream-based eyeshadow and a touch of blue shadow. Follow in their footsteps by sweeping MAC shadow in Gesso-Vivid White over the eyelid and into the brow area.

5. Then apply NARS shadow in Heart of Glass in the crease – it should look like a semi-circle when your eyes are closed (this is inspired by the ’60s, after all!).

6. Take a jet black liner – like MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Gel in Blacktrack – and carefully paint a thin line from the inner corner of your top eyelid all the way out to your temple. Trace over the line with your brush until it’s 2-3 centimeters thick.

7. Repeat this on your lower lash line, aiming for a 1-2 centimeter thickness.

8. Put in your fave false lashes; add a dramatically thick coat of Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

9. Use Kevyn Acoin’s Eyebrow Pencil to darken the brows. This is subtle but makes a world of difference in solidifying the Megan Draper look.

Megan Draper’s Lip Look

10. Fill in your lips with a peach-nude lip pencil, then layer on a satin-finish lipstick that’s a shade lighter than your actual lips. Megan’s pick: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Belle du Jour and Lancome L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick in Voile de Rose.

Megan Draper’s Strand Style

11. Apply a good volumiser like Shu Uemura Volume Maker Invisible Texturising Powder all over your roots to add texture and volume; fluff it around at the root with your fingers until you can’t see the powder.

12. Tease the spot you want to volumise with a comb.

13. Finally, take the piece of hair right in front and smooth it over the little mound you have created with the comb teasing. Strategically place some bobby pins and you’re set!

Megan Draper’s Finishing Touches

14. Paint your digits a fiery orange like Deborah Lippman Nail Polish in Lara’s Theme.

15. Spray on Guy Laroche Fidji perfume everywhere “you want to be kissed”.

Now, stash your keys and cards in a pretty purse like the Miu Miu velvet clutch, put on some quirky eyewear (like Kate Spade Angelique sunglasses), the glittery Ice Dome cocktail ring and Megan’s signature Michael Kors chain necklace… and head out to find your own Don!

Can silk pillowcases save your skin (and hair)?

Ok, now that we have established that I am not high maintenance – just extremely practical – let me explain why I need to sleep on silk. It’s not because of the luscious, cool, glam, makes-me-feel-like-a-queen factor but because the skin needs silk. Why?

Silk & Skin

  • silk-beauty-benefitsSilk is the nearest thing to human skin. It contains 18 of the essential proteins that are found in our skin and even has the same pH, making it a potent ally against premature ageing.
  • The creamy fabric contains natural cellular albumen fibre, which helps boost cellular regeneration – again protecting skin against ageing and dullness.
  • Unlike cotton (which is very absorbent), silk does not soak up the natural moisture from our skin. The result? Better hydration, improved skin elasticity and lesser wrinkles. Similarly, it doesn’t absorb the beauty creams and serums that we put on at night, allowing them to stay on longer and work more efficiently.
  • Silk sheets and pillows offer a smoother surface for the face, so we don’t wake up with the crease marks that are common with other fabrics.
  • Silk is a natural heat regulator – it maintains body temperature and does not conduct heat or static electricity. So, it helps retain heat on cold nights and keeps us cool in the summer. Hence, better beauty sleep!

Silk & Hair

  • Sleeping on silk can help prevent hair from thinning… really! Cotton fabrics may seem soft but they cause friction –  gripping and tugging at our strands as we move in our sleep, thereby leading to hair breakage and split ends. Silk, on the hand, is much smoother, so hair simply slides over the surface however much you toss and turn. The result? Less tangling or breakage. Added bonus? A blow dry will last much longer.
  • Since silk traps less body heat than other fabrics, we wake up sans frizzy strands or a messy bed head.

So, now, isn’t it worth it? And since you undoubtedly agree, can you please drop a line to my husband in the comments below, explaining why that credit card splurge was completely worth it?

Beauty emergencies: How to fix a bad-everything day

We’ve all had them. No matter how well you maintain your beauty routine – and let’s face it, it can be erratic at times – nobody escapes a pre-party zit or hungover eyes. When I have a bad beauty day things go wrong, big style. My skin ages 10 years, my make-up only makes matters worse and my lips look as if I’ve spent two weeks in the Arctic. Forget bad hair days, this is a paper-bag day. Luckily, there’s plenty you can do to rescue a seemingly hopeless situation. Here’s how to cope when everything goes wrong.

beauty-emergency-2Tress Rx

Frizzy locks? Rub a bit of conditioner on your hands and work it through to the ends to eliminate flyaway strands. In a pinch, a drop of ordinary hand cream will do.

Limp and lank strands? Put on a headband so that it lifts hair up off the face. Spray with a volumizer; wait 10 minutes and then remove band.

Greasy hair? Rub antibacterial gel over your hands then rake your fingers through the hair before you brush and blast it dry. The high alcohol content dissolves build-up in case of a a one-off emergency.

The tired face

Skimped on sleep? Looking washed out has to be one of the most depressing beauty dilemmas. To counter, skip the full face of makeup. When you’re tired, blood is circulated away from the skin to boost the major organs. This means your usual make-up will be too dark and scary. Instead, go for moisturiser, eye drops, a light brushing of face powder, lip gloss and, if possible, a pair of sunglasses.

Baggy eyes

Still carrying around the baggage of last night? Drink as much water as you can to flush out toxins. Then, gently pat either aloe vera gel or a green clay mask on the area under the eyes to draw out remaining impurities. Or use witch hazel – it’s wonderful at removing toxins but make sure you dilute it. Use two parts water and one part witch hazel on a cotton-wool pad.

Panda eyes

Global makeup authority Bobbi Brown has the cure: always apply your eye cream before your concealer. It will help the delicate skin in that area stay hydrated and make concealer go on more smoothly. She also suggests choosing a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation. Apply to the under-eye area up to the lower lash line and, most importantly, on the innermost corner. This is the most recessed area of the face and the darkest in appearance.

Acne attack

If you notice a spot developing, wrap an ice cube in a thin handkerchief then gently massage it over the blemish for 10-second intervals. Repeat the movement 10 times: it calms down the swelling and reduces redness. Follow it up with a formulation that contains 2% salicylic acid plus concealer for on-the-spot camouflage.

beauty-emergenciesUnkissable lips

A really quick fix for lips, especially when you’ve forgotten your lip balm, is olive oil. It’s a terrific moisturiser and you can find it just about everywhere. Rub it into your lips, elbows, feet or anywhere that needs a little TLC.

Stained teeth

If red wine and coffee have stained your teeth, avoid lipstick colours with orange, yellow or beige in the formulation. The key to making teeth look whiter is contrast. So, choose bright, true reds or reds with a blue base.

Nails not up to scratch

Get a little coconut oil or olive oil and mix it with salt and baking powder. Rub this mixture all over the hands, on the palms, up to the wrists and particularly on the nails. The oil acts as a moisturiser and the baking powder releases oxygen into the skin to plump out any fine lines and increase the circulation for healthier, luminous complexion. The salt acts as a gentle exfoliant for removing any dead skin and helps to ease the cuticles for more attractive nails.

Smelly, grungy feet

This one needs a 3-part solution:

Rather than removing chipped polish on your toes and starting again, it can be masked with a coat of darker colour.

If you have a pearly eyeshadow that’s all broken up and is ready for the bin, break it down even further and mix it with a little moisturiser. Applying this to your feet will soften the skin and give you an instant sexy sheen.

If you get smelly feet, crush fresh mint in a bowl of warm water. Submerging your feet will remove any unpleasant odours.

Streaky fake tan

Ah, the joys of the self-tan. For those who’ve been well and truly Tangoed, try these tips:

If it’s really disastrous, go swimming. Local pools are notorious for having lots of chlorine and this will bleach the tan and help it fade.

If your hands are too dark, head for the kitchen and a cream cleanser. You’ll have a gleaming kitchen and your hands will have faded. But if it’s not too bad, just exfoliate really well and re-apply the tan.

If you have darker knees and ankles, rub a little whitening toothpaste into the area using a circular motion. The toothpaste will gently exfoliate and the whitening agent will remove colour.
