Bring ‘Em Back: Discontinued Beauty Products

The discontinued beauty product. Everyone has one. You find a product you love, you bond with it, form a relationship and then… it disappears. Discontinued. Finished. End of story. Cue beauty-induced meltdown: How could they do this to me? Did they not realize how long it took me to find a mascara that didn’t give me raccoon eyes?

Sounds familiar? Has this ever happened to you? What do you do when one of your favorite products suddenly disappears from the shelves? This is my personal Holy Grail – the products I miss and seek years after they have slipped into history. If any of these brands are reading this, can you please bring them back into production? Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty please?

Now tell me your story… sadness loves company, after all. And who knows, someone out there might just listen to your prayers like MAC did last year!

discontinued-beauty-products Lancôme Juicy Rouge

The perfect perfect perfect blend of gloss and lipstick – buttery, lightweight and long staying. And I’ve yet to see a chocolate brown that’s as swoon-worthy as #234. I still have a minuscule amount of this shade left and am guarding it with my life.

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long Lasting Eye Liner in Rose Platine

A pretty, almost-invisible platinum-pink hue that has just the right touch of shimmer… perfect for creating that no-makeup-on-eyes look while still adding definition. It’s my go-to eye pencil for daytime and when I am rocking bright lips at night. Dreading to think what happens when this one runs out.

Chanel Beauté Initiale Energizing Multi-Protection Fluid

The original multi-tasker, way before BB creams took over the world. Firstly, this moisturizer addressed the much-ignored ‘early signs of ageing’ requirements, protecting late 20- and early-30-something skin from free radicals and everyday sun damage. Plus, it energised the skin, giving a radiance boost that you would normally get by mixing an illuminating fluid with your moisturiser. Thirdly, mattifying powders kept skin looking nicely cool and fresh throughout the day. Finally, it was light and absorbed very easily. Tears were shed when Beauté Initiale vanished from the shelves.

Clarins Eau Dynamisante Satin Finish Body Oil

This dry oil was splashed on post-shower and left skin feeling super-soft and really silky, with a subtle sheen and no greasy residue. As an added bonus, it smelled amazing – all citrusy and flowery – and made my legs glow.

L’Occitane Rose Bon Bon Lip Balm

It smelled like crushed rose petals, tasted like candied rose and left lips looking like you had rubbed fresh pink roses across them. Soft and shiny, sans any glitter or shimmer, this lip-balm-meets-gloss came in a gorgeous old fashioned glass pot that was a pretty collectable all on it’s own.

What is it for you? Do you have a much loved beauty product that has been discontinued?

Kate Moss shows us how to look good naked!

Ever since the first cut of Kate Moss’ bare-all ad campaign for St. Tropez have hit the net, we mere mortals are suffering from a baaaaad case of body envy. The woman, after all, is 39-years-old! 39. Seriously. Would you believe it? And if I use St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, do I have a shot at looking a little more like her? Frankly, I doubt it very much. Hence, the need to bring out the big guns and dig a whole lot deeper into the look-good-naked strategies of the glam squad.

Unsurprisingly, they all have a lot in common. So, whether you’re shedding some layers to hit the beach or stripping down for some bedroom action, here’s how to make your hot bod look especially hot – without having to hit the gym or resorting to plastic surgery!

Give yourself a good brushin’

Kate Moss makes her skin smoothing routine even more effective by adding dry body brushing to the mix. This not only leaves skin super-soft but also gets the circulation going and boosts lymphatic flow, thereby encouraging cellulite deposits to disperse. Plus, the process boosts metabolism, eliminates dead skin cells and helps the body’s natural detoxification process.

Exfoliate!

You absolutely need to scrub off dead skin cells in order to look radiant in the buff. And there is no better way to do this than Mandi Lulur, the traditional beauty ritual reserved for royal brides in Central Java. Renown for its skin softening qualities, this potent body scrub stimulates circulation and helps eliminate toxins from the lymphatic system. At the same time, it lightens the skin tone and sweetens skin aroma.

The Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts offers up this recipe: Blend 3 tablespoons rice starch, 2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon sandalwood powder, 1 tablespoon dried jasmine flower powder (or 3 drops jasmine essential oil) and 3 drops each of ylang ylang and sandalwood essential oils. Add a little tepid water to make the mixture smooth and creamy. Apply all over the body (except the face); rest for around 5 minutes until the scrub dries. Gently rub the skin to remove the paste and apply 1/2 cup plain yoghurt. Leave on the yoghurt for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off in the shower. Yoghurt helps remove the slight yellow color left on the skin from the turmeric, while its lactic acids soften the skin.

Clean it up… clean it all up!

Another reason to love super-clean skin (besides zapping those zits): tiny pores equals a youthful looking complexion. When summer temperatures are hot, pores can look larger because of sweating. Deep cleansing makes them look smaller and tighter.

Put on the mask

One thing that sets us apart from those gorgeous models with their perfect skin? They don’t restrict beauty masks just to the face. Rather, they make them work for every inch of the body, especially this Cucumber and Milk Mask, which is superb for cooling, soothing and moisturizing the skin. Native to India, cucumbers have been embraced worldwide for their cooling properties. They are a natural source of enzymes and vitamins, while also being natural hydrators. Milk powder is full of natural emollients and vitamins As and Bs, thereby helping restore lost moisture to the skin.

And it’s easy: puree 6 cucumbers in a blender until smooth (remove the skin beforehand). Stir in 2 cups powdered milk until thoroughly mixed. Add 4 drops each of lavender, lemongrass, geranium and lime essential oils, then mix again. Apply the mixture directly to your body and lie down for 20 minutes (you may want to envelop your body in a sheet). Finish with a cool shower.

Dial down the hot water

Talking of cold showers, switch to the coolest setting you can bear for a couple of minutes at the end of you bath. According to skincare guru Ole Henriksen, “It’s a little uncomfortable, but helps to further tone and firm the skin.”

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that work best and you don’t need any super-expensive lotions to see results either. Simply substitute your regular moisturizer for one with a sexy sheen (like Carita Fluide de Beauté 14 Gold) or, better yet, for baby oil. It seals in the moisture and is great for your skin.

Hide & Treat

Stuck with body blemishes? You can speed up the healing of bruises by using an arnica cream. For zits, on the other hand, the best approach starts in the shower: use a body wash with at least 1.25 percent salicylic acid (Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash Pink Grapefruit is superb). Once you’re dry, add a layer of benzoyl peroxide or a prescription antibiotic lotion.

To camouflage either bruises or blemishes, apply a cream concealer and set it with translucent powder.

Hide your stripes

There’s no way to erase stretch marks completely but you can make them less noticeable. The best quick fix: bring out the self tanner. This not only camouflages the pinky-white stripes and other imperfections, it’s also a great way to look thinner. Plus, there is that whole glow-y aura it imparts to your body. As Kate Moss puts it: “It makes me feel more confident, you just feel better when you look in the mirror and you look much healthier. Sometimes I think I feel terrible but I look great!”

And try some basic sculpting: for a chiseled face, sweep bronzer across the apples of your cheeks; or for Kate Moss-like legs, use a darker bronzer on the outside of the leg and blend with a lighter shade on the inside.

Get perky

Every single model or actress – yes, including Kate Moss – puts in some light exercise on the day of a shoot or runway show. This gets the blood pumping in their muscles and leave them looking more toned. To quickly – albeit temporarily – tighten your jiggly areas, follow this advice from David Kirsch, Heidi Klum’s trainer: ”Five minutes before you get in the shower, do 10 squats, 10 sumo lunges, and 10 push-ups. You’ll feel firmer and more confident, and stand taller.”

Beat the bloat!

While it might seem like a good idea to calm your nerves by having a mammoth bar of chocolate or downing a couple of glasses of wine for “liquid” courage, eat and drink only lightly before stripping down to the nude. Otherwise you will risk looking bloated.

Or try a Thai detox bath: Blend together 2 tablespoon cold pressed oil (such as grape seed, sesame or almond oil) 3 drops essential oils of ginger, 2 drops bergamot and 1 drop lemongrass. Get into a bath (or shower) and massage this blend all over your body with smooth strokes towards the heart together with kneading techniques to increase circulation. Leave on the oils for 20 minutes, then rinse well and towel dry.

Accessorize… strategically

Just because you are naked doesn’t mean you can’t accessorize! High heels are sexy and have the advantage of making your legs look especially lean – plus, heels give your butt an extra lift. Or, for a more playful option, don a feather boa or a rocking piece of dangly jewelry that rests on your best assets to emphasise them further.

Find the right lighting

I can bet anything that Kate Moss was surrounded by a gazillion different kinds of extremely clever lighting rigs to create that warm, rosy glow that seems to be radiating from right within her skin. While it’s unfeasible to aim for that level of paraphernalia, it is still possible to create a flattering effect within your own environment. Firstly, ditch  the harsh fluorescents and opt instead for soft, glowing light sources – such as candles, uplighting or floor lamp. If the lamp is too bright, throw a sheer scarf or sheet over it. Position yourself so that the lighting is behind you, rendering flaws more difficult to spot.

For more spectacular occasions, borrow a trick from LA interior designers Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield, who recommend going amber, since “Amber light casts skin in a warm, rosy glow.” Their suggestion: place a red hued bulb in bedside lamps. I tweaked this a little by throwing on a red scarf over the bedside lamp and it worked brilliantly!

Opt for a warm fragrance

This is not the time to go all cold and icy. Instead, draw attention to your décolletage and wrists by dabbing on a warm, spicy fragrance such as Coco by Coco Chanel or Tom Ford Violet Blonde. It will keep the blood (and libido) flowing!

look-sexyEmbrace nudes

We all know that ‘nude’ rarely means literally nude in the makeup world (see the Kate Moss photo above!). Instead, aim for a you-just-slightly-better effect with a palette of spiced up neutrals – peach lipstick, taupe shadows – that mimic your natural skin tone. This is the perfect complement to your birthday suit.

Get into position

Ever noticed that none of the models in those photographs are ever standing/sitting/lying down ramrod straight? That’s because how you position your body directs the eyes to or away from certain body parts. Here are some suggestions:

  • If you like your waist, draw the eye there by putting a hand on one hip. And twist your torso slightly to accentuate the the narrowness of your waist even further.
  • Similarly, arching your back will play up the chest and butt, making them appear more prominent. If you need extra help, put on a pair of high heels.
  • If you want to direct attention to your legs, keep your toes pointed and your legs slightly crossed, so that they overlap a bit. This will make them appear longer and smoother.
  • To make your chest appear bigger, drop your shoulders and fold your arms around your waist, so that each hand lands on the opposite waist curve.

How To Apply Nail Wraps Like A Pro

Nail wraps have become the most buzzed about beauty accessory. And they are far easier than hand drawn nail art – unless you are Van Gogh or Picasso, which I am decidedly not. Hence, it seemed like a good idea to seek the flawless-nail-wrap-commandments from the manicure mavens for fingers and toes that sparkle sans ugly bumps and ragged edges.

Step 1: Start with room temperature hands

I would never have thought of this in a zillion years – if your hands are too cold or too warm, the nail wraps may not stay put for the full 10 days (average durability of a nail wrap).

Step 2: Clean your nails

Remove all traces of your old nail polish, along with every speck of oil, grease and dust before applying the wraps. If anything (including hand cream) is left on your nails, the wraps will start to peel off. So wipe down your nails with a nail polish remover beforehand.

Step 3: Corner those cuticles

The best thing to do is to give yourself a manicure before applying the nail wraps. However, if you’re in a rush, just make sure to push down your cuticles (with an orange wood stick) so the wraps don’t stick to them instead of the actual nail. Also buff out any ridges but do NOT shine your nails – the nail wraps grip better to a non-smooth surface.

Step 4: Pick your size

Select the best wrap for your size by placing the template over your nail, with the curved end up to the cuticle. Ensure that the sides do not overlap onto the skin – you can trim them if necessary but do not touch the length at this time. Experts suggest using a wrap that is slightly smaller than your nail, so that it lies completely flat with no air bubbles.

Who says nail art is just for your hands?

Who says nail art is just for your hands?

Step 5: Place and stretch

Peel the wrap from the protective backing by holding the straight edge at the top (try not to touch the curved end as this will affect the adhesive backing). Apply it to your nail, starting at the base of the nail bed; place the curved end as close as possible to the cuticle without touching it. Then slightly stretch the wrap to the top of your nail to make sure it’s smooth. Try to place it accurately the first time as pulling it on and off will affect how well it stays on your nail.

Step 6: Trim off the excess

This is always the trickiest step. Gently smooth the excess length over the end of your nail, letting it stick to your finger to keep it taut. Using your thumb smooth the covering over your nail, working from one edge to the other to ensure there are no creases. Finally file off the excess length using downward strokes. You can use a small pair of nail clippers to clean off any white edges that remain after filing.

Step 7: Gloss and go!

Finish with a clear top coat (unless the nail wrap instructions specifically caution against it) for extra shine.

Beauty emergencies: How to fix a bad-everything day

We’ve all had them. No matter how well you maintain your beauty routine – and let’s face it, it can be erratic at times – nobody escapes a pre-party zit or hungover eyes. When I have a bad beauty day things go wrong, big style. My skin ages 10 years, my make-up only makes matters worse and my lips look as if I’ve spent two weeks in the Arctic. Forget bad hair days, this is a paper-bag day. Luckily, there’s plenty you can do to rescue a seemingly hopeless situation. Here’s how to cope when everything goes wrong.

beauty-emergency-2Tress Rx

Frizzy locks? Rub a bit of conditioner on your hands and work it through to the ends to eliminate flyaway strands. In a pinch, a drop of ordinary hand cream will do.

Limp and lank strands? Put on a headband so that it lifts hair up off the face. Spray with a volumizer; wait 10 minutes and then remove band.

Greasy hair? Rub antibacterial gel over your hands then rake your fingers through the hair before you brush and blast it dry. The high alcohol content dissolves build-up in case of a a one-off emergency.

The tired face

Skimped on sleep? Looking washed out has to be one of the most depressing beauty dilemmas. To counter, skip the full face of makeup. When you’re tired, blood is circulated away from the skin to boost the major organs. This means your usual make-up will be too dark and scary. Instead, go for moisturiser, eye drops, a light brushing of face powder, lip gloss and, if possible, a pair of sunglasses.

Baggy eyes

Still carrying around the baggage of last night? Drink as much water as you can to flush out toxins. Then, gently pat either aloe vera gel or a green clay mask on the area under the eyes to draw out remaining impurities. Or use witch hazel – it’s wonderful at removing toxins but make sure you dilute it. Use two parts water and one part witch hazel on a cotton-wool pad.

Panda eyes

Global makeup authority Bobbi Brown has the cure: always apply your eye cream before your concealer. It will help the delicate skin in that area stay hydrated and make concealer go on more smoothly. She also suggests choosing a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation. Apply to the under-eye area up to the lower lash line and, most importantly, on the innermost corner. This is the most recessed area of the face and the darkest in appearance.

Acne attack

If you notice a spot developing, wrap an ice cube in a thin handkerchief then gently massage it over the blemish for 10-second intervals. Repeat the movement 10 times: it calms down the swelling and reduces redness. Follow it up with a formulation that contains 2% salicylic acid plus concealer for on-the-spot camouflage.

beauty-emergenciesUnkissable lips

A really quick fix for lips, especially when you’ve forgotten your lip balm, is olive oil. It’s a terrific moisturiser and you can find it just about everywhere. Rub it into your lips, elbows, feet or anywhere that needs a little TLC.

Stained teeth

If red wine and coffee have stained your teeth, avoid lipstick colours with orange, yellow or beige in the formulation. The key to making teeth look whiter is contrast. So, choose bright, true reds or reds with a blue base.

Nails not up to scratch

Get a little coconut oil or olive oil and mix it with salt and baking powder. Rub this mixture all over the hands, on the palms, up to the wrists and particularly on the nails. The oil acts as a moisturiser and the baking powder releases oxygen into the skin to plump out any fine lines and increase the circulation for healthier, luminous complexion. The salt acts as a gentle exfoliant for removing any dead skin and helps to ease the cuticles for more attractive nails.

Smelly, grungy feet

This one needs a 3-part solution:

Rather than removing chipped polish on your toes and starting again, it can be masked with a coat of darker colour.

If you have a pearly eyeshadow that’s all broken up and is ready for the bin, break it down even further and mix it with a little moisturiser. Applying this to your feet will soften the skin and give you an instant sexy sheen.

If you get smelly feet, crush fresh mint in a bowl of warm water. Submerging your feet will remove any unpleasant odours.

Streaky fake tan

Ah, the joys of the self-tan. For those who’ve been well and truly Tangoed, try these tips:

If it’s really disastrous, go swimming. Local pools are notorious for having lots of chlorine and this will bleach the tan and help it fade.

If your hands are too dark, head for the kitchen and a cream cleanser. You’ll have a gleaming kitchen and your hands will have faded. But if it’s not too bad, just exfoliate really well and re-apply the tan.

If you have darker knees and ankles, rub a little whitening toothpaste into the area using a circular motion. The toothpaste will gently exfoliate and the whitening agent will remove colour.

5 Hair and Makeup Tricks That Make Guys Melt

Make his blood pressure rise with these almost effortless hair and makeup tricks that the guys fall for every time. Yes, every single time. So, get your game on and prepare to be the centre of all (male) attention!

1. Dew it up

Rosie Huntington Whitely: it's all about the skin

Rosie Huntington Whitely: it’s all about the skin

Men love dewy, glowy, buttery skin that looks “real” and is very, very touchable. This is not the time for a powdery, caked-on look that brings to mind cold mannequins. For a luminous effect, exfoliate with a fine grained scrub and then massage your face with a hydrating moisturiser (like MAC’s Strobe Cream) or facial oil for 5 minutes. After that, wipe off the excess with a tissue and dab on a creamy, illuminating foundation. Swipe concealer on spots and scars and smudge in a cream blusher. Finally, apply highlighter: using a fan brush, create a C shape – start at the inner corner of the eye, swoop it over the brow bone and onto your cheekbone – on both sides. Finish by patting a little down the bridge of your nose, your chin and above the middle of your lips. Skip the powder entirely… or if your face tends to be uber-greasy, gently buff it into the t-zone. And don’t forget the rest of your body: if you plan to show a little (or a lot of!) skin, catch the light and his attention with a shimmery lotion like Benefit’s Bathina Take a Picture It Lasts Longer Body Balm.

2. Amp up the bedroom eyes

Go smokey, not scary

Go smokey, not scary

While smoky eyes are the last word in come-hither sexiness, all that smudgy, racoon-like black-and-gray can be too scary for the male mind. Instead, go softer with navy blue eye shadow for all the drama, without the goth factor. And keep it simple: apply colour to your lid and lower lash line, then gently blend so it looks naturally slept-in. Set it off with eyelashes that are guaranteed to make him swoon by piling on one layer each of lengthening and curling mascara. Or, apply a few false lash clusters to the outer corners of your eyes. Seems simple but works like a charm every time!

3. Make your lips extra kissable

Adriana Lima: lips that go the distance

Adriana Lima: lips that go the distance

Scarlet may be sexy but men don’t like kissing lipstick that feels gloopy, sticky or is likely to come off all over their own face. So, you need lip colour that lasts. And lasts and lasts. Start by applying a stain on bare lips, layer a matching lipstick on top, then add another coat of stain. This is Kissing 101.

4. Add some strategic shimmer

If it works for angels...

If it works for angels…

Borrow a page from the Victoria’s Secret supermodels and trace bronzer around the inside of each breast to enhance your cleavage. Then lightly dust a fine-grained shimmer (NOT disco-ball sized glitter) on the top of your décolletage, in a capital T shape. And be ready for a hefty helping of the old “Eyes up here, mister!” expression!

5. Get bed head waves

Blake Lively: hair help

Blake Lively: hair help

If there is one thing that does not appeal to men, it’s severe, crunchy, over-styled hair. Instead, entice with a ‘do that invites him to run his hands through your glossy strands. How to do it? Just go to bed with damp hair. The next day, simply wind a few sections around a curling iron and finger-comb. Well, if it works for Gisele… .
