I have a pathological dislike of pain. Which is why my legs get shaved rather than waxed. And which is why they are usually sporting horrid-looking nicks, cuts and super-dry skin that no amount of Bliss Naked Body Butter or L’Occitane Ultra Rich Body Cream is able to transform into skirt-skimmingingly glowy gorgeousness!
Then I ran into a college friend who now lives in Russia and has legs like butter… no exaggeration. And being a great buddy, she bestowed upon me this Russian shaving oil recipe that’s been around for a few hundred years and apparently gives ultra-sexy skin every single time!
Plus, it’s super-simple: Pour 3 tablespoons of almond oil in a bowl. Add half a tablespoon each of wheat germ oil, canola oil and sesame oil then stir till everything is all mixed up. Slather onto legs and shave. Simple, right? And this has a long shelf life so you can make a larger batch and store in a pretty bottle (the pretty bottle won’t make it more efficient – it’s just my personal commandment). As for the razor – dunk it into a shot glass of vodka (this is Russian, remember?) for a couple of hours and it shall come out all clean and fresh, sans any oily traces!
I have tried this thrice and my legs are definitely looking much better. This week, I might even bare them in this thigh-skimming floaty chiffon-silk dress from Leaves of Grass. What do you think? Good for a chilled-out Sunday champagne brunch? Or should I keep it more chic and monochromatic with the Alice by Temperley number on the right? I need your help here!

Thanks for sharing your friends silky legs secret! I will have to try this!! As for the chill-out Sunday brunch attire… tough decision but, I would go with the Alice with some cute strappy sandals
Enjoy!
Hi Renee, thanks for your message. I did end up wearing the Alice and got tons of fab compliments – from the girls. Which makes me think that the male of our species just doesn’t care about what we don in any case
Absolutely – you rock girl!!!!
Is there an alternative product that we can use for cleansing the razor other than vodka?
I believe isopropyl alcohol can show the same results but haven’t tried it personally. Let me know if you decide to give it a go!
Adobe photoshop…and you will havesmoothest legs
Grin… wish I could take Photoshop along with me everywhere in real time
Where do you find wheat germ oil and almond oil?
It should be available in any pharmacy or department store. Look for organic-grade if possible.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for this! I live in Florida and am so ashamed of my legs that I don’t even own a pair of shorts. >.< If this works I can finally have a tan!
Quick question though, do you mean pharmacies like CVS, or a less "chain" pharmacy? Also, could one find sesame oil there as well?
Would it be okay to use this on the mons pubis?
Don’t see any harm as we use shaving creams there anyway and this is all-natural. But would suggest you try a small patch before going for the whole bit! [And do report back on how it went for the benefit of the rest of us pls!]
Do we have to wet our legs before putting on the oils? Or just apply them dry.
Apply them to dry skin, else might emulsify and get messy.
Are these oils found in the grocery section? Or the beauty section? Just wanna make sure!!!
Should be in the grocery section as they are generally used for cooking but I guess it would depend from store to store. The almond oil would more likely to be in the beauty section, though.
I love this stuff!!!! and i think the alice by temperly!!!
YAY!!!!!!!!
Thank u
) And I did wear the Alice!!!!
I think this is a marvelous idea, however I’m pretty allergic to all sorts of nuts. Could you please recommend some other sort of base oil I may try, because I would really love to use this recipe! Thank you!
also, sorry if this ends up being a double post.
You can use olive oil instead of almond oil… besides that, I think it should be ok?
Thanks for the tip, many of these ‘old fashioned’ methods work really well if given an opportunity, for this one I just have to find all the ingredients, and hope this helps with the bumps too.
both dresses are pretty but Leaves of Grass to me is prettier.
Greetings from BiH!
after shaving your legs and washing the oil, did you apply any sort of cream or you didn’t find it necessary?
I normally shave my legs at night and then put on my usual body lotion… nothing special. What about you?
sorry my lapop keyboard does not work well.
I MEANT
Can we just apply it for a few minutes and then wash it off so we can still get beautiful glowing skin?
It would definitely help if you massaged it in and left it for a few hours. But this is more as a base for a close shave and not a skin treatment on it’s own.
Hi, Anubha
Im a guy who stumbled across this site and find this a very interesting idea. I have heard of the use of oil instead of the canned creams and will give it a try.
Do you have any evidence to suggest mixing the oils has any effect beyond that of a regular vegetable oil?
Also, I liked the first few comments where you respond to yourself. It was funny.
Thanks.
Uh… sorry, don’t understand the “respond to yourself”???? About the oils, every different one has its own benefits so they work really well together. And thanks for the compliments
I recommend the dress from Leaves of Grass- It’s so pretty!
Also, thank you for this awesome tip, btw- stumbleupon led me here
This sounds like a great thing to try. I am always trying new tricks!
Sharing is caring… This is a must share
Thank you for caring
i wax. what do i do ?
So lovely to have you back here
New post on exactly this topic coming up soon, stay tuned!
Is there a good substitute for wheat germ oil? I can’t find it in the store.
Look for hemp oil, extra virgin coconut oil or avocado oil… in that order.
Here’s an easy tip for nice smooth silky legs after you shave..quick,,easy…cheap and painless….when in the shower…shampoo your legs…now shave..when done condition your legs with the cream rinse you would use on your hair…done…your legs will be nice and shinny/smooth/and soft!! I’ve been doing this for years:0 Works for meL(
Sounds good!
hi! one question, we put the razor in vodka after we shave just to clean the razor, right? this is amazing. can’t wait to try it!
yes – the vodka cleans the razor and prevents rust formation
Thank you for sharing this to us! Would definitely love to try it!
Hope you like the results
Hi! I was just wondering if you use this like regular shaving cream (put it on right before shaving) or if you are supposed to let it soak into the skin for a while first? Thanks!
-Ashley
P.s. So glad you picked the Alice dress. It’s beautiful!
Hi Ashley, I use it like a regular shaving cream though it’s better if you let it sit a minute or so on the skin to soften the hair. That’s what I do with a regular shaving cream also. And am so happy you like the Alice
Definitely the teal one! So lovely!
Great tip. I used sweet almond oil mixed with my shower gel for shaving for a long time…. I like a bit of lather. Definitelly will try the other oils in the mix.
Sweet almond oil is one of my faves as well!
keep it chic and wear the white dress!!!
I did – another day
Great tips I’ll have to try these this summer
