Chanel Resort 2013 channels the big, bad wolf!

Ugh, what is it with Chanel this year? The brand has always been known for its uber-memorable ad campaigns but suddenly everything they produce is just… ugh (apologies, words fail me at this juncture!). First there was the Brad Pitt fiasco and now these spreads for Chanel Resort 2013, where Cara Delevingne is apparently channelling the opulence and sensuality of a “modern-day Marie Antoinette”.

Pardon me for maybe not being “high fashion” enough but there is none of the whimsical femininity that I associate with either Marie Antoinette or Karl Lagerfeld’s own vision of the French Revolutionary style, which he showcased to sheer perfection in to the gardens of Versailles a few months back. In fact, to me she looks like the big bad wolf dressed in Red Riding Hood’s grandmother’s clothing rather than one of the most romantic queens the world has ever seen.

Granted that one must be edgy to capture eyeballs during today’s tough times but does edgy have to mean ugly? Because thats what these images look like to me – nothing here evokes the blooming petticoats, resplendent fabrics and frilled corsets that make up the Resort collection. And absolutely none of the images put me in the mood to but any of the wares on offer. What about you? Do you also hate the campaign? Or do you think I am just an old fashioned fuddy duddy for not falling in love with it at first glance?

The Click. The Red. The Allure.

Oh.My.God. I can’t remember the last time I saw a beauty video that was so gorgeously put together.

Photographer Solve Sundsbo – the master of vintage photography techniques that create a dramatic, almost surreal, vibe – channels the extravagant artificiality and heady eroticism of Erwin Blumenfeld from the 1930s, elevating Chanel’s Rouge Allure to the status of a classic icon – more art than commerce. This is one makeup advertisement that’s going to remain in the annals of both beauty and photography for a very, very long time! Don’t you agree?

First Look: Blake Lively’s print ad for Gucci Premiere

Whew! That was fast. It’s been less than a week since news broke of Blake Lively becoming the new Gucci girl and the first print advertisements are already here. Shot by the iconic team of Mert & Marcus, the blonde bombshell is seen channeling a 1940s-meets-21st-century vibe that’s the perfect embodiment of “timeless Hollywood glamour and the iconic leading ladies of Hollywood’s golden era”, which is the inspiration behind Premiere, the brand’s new perfume. I think she rocks but then I always think Blake looks super-gorgeous, so my opinion might be a bit biased. What are your views?

Top Three Ad Campaigns for Spring

If the gorgeous ads peaking out from fashion magazines are anything to go by, this spring is going to be super-pretty, ultra-feminine and drenched in ice cream pastels. And even though the ads I am talking about are for clothes rather than beauty products, who wouldn’t want to recreate these candy-coated makeup looks as the temperature rises. I, for one, can’t wait to indulge!

“The spirit of our Spring/Summer 2012 collection is reflected beautifully in this new ad campaign,” says Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Marc Jacobs. “All the tone and texture of the collection – the lightness, the prettiness, the broderie anglaise, the millefeuille layers of organza – are recreated in these wonderful images by Steven Meisel. It is all very soft and very sweet, yet at the same time very bold and very graphic.”
