Hand Over the Diamonds. And the Lego.

Remember when jeweller Azature released that $250,000 black nail polish made from 267 carats of black diamonds? Understanding that not everyone is keen to spend a quarter of a million dollars on a nail polish, they have paired it with a more obtainable version that contains pretty sparkles instead of decadent diamonds. And they have now brought out a whole range of colours for spring, which shimmer and shine in pretty sunshine hues. Priced at $17 each, they double up as twinkling accessories in themselves. I would love to see how the yellow one plays out against summer-tanned skin!

azature diamond springIf that’s still a bit too sparkly for your taste, two of my favourite brands have just joined the nail polish bandwagon and both offer standout alternatives to your regular enamel.

First up is Crabtree & Evelyn, whose 21-piece lacquer collection includes some gorgeous colours, from neutrals to lights and darks to brights, along with a clear top coat. Plus, they are formulated without camphor, dibutyl phthalates, formaldehyde or toluene. And did I mention that they’re only $6 a bottle? Which is something to be thankful for, since I want them all! I hope Crabtree does multi-shade sets with these nail polishes, like they do with those gorgeous hand creams. Somehow, I feel less guilty buying 2 sets rather than 20 individual polishes. Don’t worry about understanding the logic… I just do!

Their genius addition? Stackable nail polish. The 21 shades, which range from nude to a trendy emerald green, come in packs of three and snap together like Lego blocks. Each shade of a trio can be worn alone or layered over one another. The bottles are small (everybody knows small = cute), so you’ll have plenty of room to stock up. And stack up. Plus, there are nail art ideas printed on the side: with three shades at your disposal, you might as well get creative! And like most of Physician’s Formula’s other products, the Endless Color Nail Trios are formulated sans gluten (good news for everyone who loves a tasty nail lacquer) and the yucky toxic chemicals found in most brands. At $10.95 dollars per pack, this one definitely gets you your’s money’s worth!

Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Collection

crabtree & evelyn, gardener, skincare, hands, beauty

I have absolutely no logical reason for craving the Gardener’s Watering Can set from Crabtree & Evelyn. I don’t have a garden (I have some 100-year-old jackfruit, amaltas and jasmine trees and a few strands of a nameless creeper – but these can by no stretch make up an actual “garden”). Even if there was a garden, chances that I would be getting down and dirty with the weeds and bugs is close to non-existent. Don’t get me wrong – I love lush green leaves and colourful flowers. It’s just that I much prefer them all prettied up in a lovely pot or growing haphazardly across the woods with someone else dealing with the dirt and grime and heat and backbreaking work. (Me, high maintenance? NEVER! Whatever gave you that idea?).

However, if you are the kind who loves gardening, this would be the perfectly perfect self-indulgent treat after a long day of working in the soil. The set contains a Gardeners Liquid Hand Soap (with alfalfa, carrot root, rosemary leaf, sage and chicory leaf to leave hands fresh and muck-free), Gardeners Hand Therapy (Shea butter to nourish and condition), Gardeners Nail & Cuticle Therapy Cream (Shea butter and keratin to soften the cuticles and protect the nails) and a Wooden Nail Brush. Everything is scented with fresh green clover, lavender, sage, rosemary and thyme – perfect for carrying a bit of that fresh-from-the-garden smell wherever you go. And it’s so gorgeously Brit-looking (if this set was a guy, I am sure it would be Hugh Grant in Sense & Sensibility)!

Actually, come to think of it, that’s reason enough for me to buy it – I love the fresh-from-the-garden smell, have terribly unmaintained hands and love nothing more than channeling a bit of that old English countryside vibe of rolling meadows, wicker baskets, pretty pastel hats and sundresses. And, after all, what is beauty but an illusion? ;)

Mother’s Day Beauty Bargains

It’s Mother’s Day tomorrow and even though I know that nobody needs a ‘special day’ to love the most important woman in our lives (yes! even for the men – and I say this as a married woman with a live-in mom-in-law) it’s sometimes nice to have a reason to pause and make her feel that bit more special. And while moms don’t need store-bought gifts to know we love them – mine, personally, would be happy if I would commit to spending the day roaming through super-crowded wholesale markets with her (don’t ask!) – what better way could there be to bring some relaxed pampering into her life than with a luscious tub of face cream, prettily packaged lotions or a floaty massage?

This Mother’s Day, some beauty brands are making it even easier to indulge with superb packages and discounts. Here’s my pick of the best offers along with suggestions on exactly what product will best warm mom’s heart (while making her skin glow!). And since no mom is going to be completely happy unless you indulge yourself as well, there are also recommendations for some self-gifting.

Crabtree & Evelyn Comes to India

Crabtree & Evelyn, John Evelyn, Cyrus Harvey, India, Evelyn, Mumbai, Delhi, Crabtree, beauty, cosmetics, skincare, perfume, fragrance, scentI can finally stop begging people travelling to foreign shores to get me endless supplies of Crabtree & Evelyn’s Lavender Hand Recovery or their Goatmilk Comforting Body Lotion or the Black Sea Mud & Seaweed Triple Milled Heritage Soap or the Summer Hill Scented Body Lotion or the… you get the idea! The gorgeous British brand is finally in India – with a standalone boutique each in Mumbai and Delhi, courtesy Genesis Luxury :) :) :) :)

To the uninitiated, what make Crabtree & Evelyn so special (besides the gorgeous packaging) is their wholehearted immersion in the riches of the natural world. Long before the natural and wellness movement became popular, this brand was introducing showering us with holistic and indulgent (a rare combination) products made with the purest fruit, flower and plant essences. In fact, Cyrus Harvey (who founded Crabtree & Evelyn in 1972 as a small, family-run business that initially specialised in fine soaps), took his inspiration from John Evelyn, a 17th Century Englishman who was one of the world’s first naturalists and conservationists.

Crabtree & Evelyn, John Evelyn, Cyrus Harvey, India, Evelyn, Mumbai, Delhi, Crabtree, beauty, cosmetics, skincare, perfume, fragrance, scentToday, despite becoming an international phenomenon that embraces everything from soaps and perfumes to room sprays and reed diffusers, Crabtree & Evelyn continues to be inspired by the early home apothecary – or ‘still room’ as it was called in England. These still rooms existed at a time when the garden played an integral role in daily life – a time when fresh flowers, herbs and fruits were distilled to make fragrant waters for the bath and soothing essences for the skin, while fruit preserves were created to brighten the winter larder. From the magic of the still room came the little luxuries and necessities that enhanced the quality of everyday life. And it is this romantic, gorgeous heritage that Crabtree & Evelyn now brings to Indian shores. Can’t wait to stock up? This is where you will find the goodies:
