Estee Lauder’s Jewelled Flag of Britain

Just back from London, skipped wishing Her Majesty the Queen (am sure she must be devastated but I have just this much time after all!) for the Diamond Jubilee, passed up on dear ol’ Kate & William and spent the entire three days SHOPPING!!!! How could I not, with all the super-gorgeous beauty treats up for grabs in honour of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne?

Estee Lauder, Jewelled Flag of Britain, Beautiful, perfume, fragrance, limited edition, queen, london, diamond jubilee

Still unpacking the bags but simply had to show you this ultra-scrumptious gold-plated solid perfume compact from Estee Lauder. It’s called Jewelled Flag of Britain, has been handcrafted by fine jewellers and decorated with 130 Swarovski Elements. Inside is one of my favourite Estee Lauder perfumes – Beautiful – which unveils a romantic blend of Queen-worthy notes like lily, cassis and tuberose (I have it on good authority that the latter is, in fact, one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite florals).

The cost? £320. Yes, certainly not cheap but it’s really, really gorgeous and how many times does a Royal Jubilee come around anyway? If you want this royal souvenir, head over to Estee Lauder and buy it NOW! This one’s not going to stick around for long. I picked up the second-to-last piece at Harrods on Sunday, so am sure it’s sold out there by now!

Happy Birthday Big Ben!

Somewhere during all the hoopla of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, one of London’s oldest icons quietly turned 153-years-old on May 31st. I am talking about the Big Ben: The biggest four-faced, chiming clock in the world that’s one of the most recognizable structures in London and represents the city, just like the Eiffel Tower represents Paris.

But the beauty industry did not forget – and here are two gorgeous limited edition products that honour Big Ben’s marvellous legacy. Can you resist?

SteamCream’s cult 3-in-1 moisturiser is available, for a limited time, in a Big Ben version. Price: £12.95 (Stay tuned for a larger post on what exactly is SteamCream!).

And now, here’s a run-down of some choice facts about everyone’s favourite bell. Bet you didn’t know all of this?

  • Big Ben is on twitter (unofficially). Follow @big_ben_clock for the latest bongs.

  • The great clock is wound by hand and is regulated by a stack of coins.
  • At the bottom of each clock face there are gold letters showing Latin text which translates “O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First”.
  • The first 61 meters of Clock Tower are made up of brickwork and stone cladding and the remainder of tower is made from cast iron.
  • The Tower leans slightly towards northwest, by 8.66 inches.
  • There are cells in the tower where Members of Parliament can be imprisoned for a breach of parliamentary privilege.
  • BBC Radio Four transmits the chimes of Big Ben live every night before the six o’clock news.

Monday morning mood makeovers!

Having a “Bah! Humbug!” Monday morning? Banish the blues with a round-up of the most dazzling offerings floating around the beauty aisles – served up in in easy 30-second chunks to flip through when your bosses (or juniors – sometimes they can be just as annoying!) are not looking! What are you putting your money on?

1. Dolce & Gabbana Monica Lipsticks

Bold, dramatic, ultra-glam and with superb staying power (a friend who tested them out said they lasted her through an entire dinner, four flutes of Champagne, digestifs and coffee) Dolce & Gabbana’s new super-pigmented lipsticks are the perfect ode to their namesake muse – Monica Bellucci. Definitely not for those who want to blend into the background!

2. Ladurée’s Diamond Jubilee Macaroons

Yes, yes! I know this is not exactly “beauty” related but it’s Ladurée and French and British and the queen all rolled into one, so how could one resist? The Diamond Jubilee selection of macaroons come in a Union Jack box decorated with the crown and the Jubilee emblem. It will be available in Ladurée shops across London, Paris and New York from June 1, for €15.50.

3. Annick Goutal Nuit Étoilée

Described as “Narnia in a bottle” (and what a gorgeous bottle!), Nuit Étoilée has been inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night and is woven with Siberian pine, sweet orange, balsam fir, tonka bean, citron, angelica, everlasting flowers and peppermint (which brings a unique hint of chill to the fragrance). For once, a perfume evokes what the press release promises:

“Imagine, perhaps, a majestic forest where waterfalls flow between the trees, where aromatic fragrances scent the skin, and where delicate leaves form soft and inviting beds. Here, the sheer immensity of the moonlit countryside consorts with absolute serenity beneath a veil of shimmering stars.”

4. Givenchy Éte á Fleur de Peau Eye Liner

A nude eye liner? This is something totally new for me and I am waiting to see how it works. Apparently this star product from Givenchy’s new Éte á Fleur de Peau summer collection is quite a multi-tasker – you can also use it as an eye primer or lip liner. At £15 that’s quite a steal, even if it doesn’t really make much of an impact on the eye liner front (*sceptical*).

5. Swarovski Crystal Gloss Jewels

Sometimes beauty and jewellery come together in a totally irresistible combination – like these gorgeous, GORGEOUS Swarovski glosses (can be used on eyes and lips) that you can wear around your neck as a statement piece. They have a lovely shine, thanks to the powdered, micronized Swarovski crystal iridescent pearls in the formula and come in three variations – Transparent Shimmer (£48), Glistening Pink (£48) and Silver Shimmer (£55).
