Most Stunning Beauty Moments From Haute Couture Spring 2013

Think spring haute couture and what comes to mind are gorgeous gowns and over-the-top makeup. This, after all, is the realm of dreams and magic. The place where a handful of the world’s top designers get to indulge in the most extravagant and outlandish of fashion fantasies, with nary a nod to the real world. Fortunately, they imbue hair and makeup with this enchanting touch as well, creating beauty looks that make for some great eye candy. Here are the most stunning examples that walked the Haute Couture Spring 2013 runways in Paris this week… care to be inspired?

Chanel

Dark, moody and almost-mythical, the makeup on Chanel’s spring haute couture runway took two of the season’s biggest beauty trends – the smoky eye and the messy ‘do – and gave them a gothic twist. Peter Philips smudged on jet black, waxy shadows into winged shapes, imbuing the deep, dark smoky eye with an eerie feel. Sam McKnight, in the meantime, created oversized and exaggerated updos’, with each and every hairstyle individually created to flatter a model’s face. Add in the play on dramatic hair accessories – made from silk, feather, lace and cotton – and it was the very embodiment of organised chaos. Pure drama!

Christian Dior

It’s the return of the power lip, but not as we know it: in a continuing thread from last year’s ready-to-wear Spring 2013 show, makeup artist Pat McGrath freehanded with iridescent Swarovski crystals, placing them over hot orange, pink, purple and red lipstick for the new 3D lip look. Set against adorable pixie crops and a completely pared-down makeup base, this is glitter that’s graduated from its Tinkerbell days to find a new sex appeal.

Atelier Versace

Versace’s models ruled the spring haute couture catwalk in dramatic eyes, with smoky black shadow offset by strips of neon green liner on the outer and inner corners. The overall effect evoked butterfly wings and lightened the dark mood of the presentation, especially when paired with dewy skin, brushed-up brows and a sheer, glittery lip gloss.

Alexis Mabille

To celebrate his label’s birth as an official Paris couture house, Alexis Mabille offset frothy confections and bubblegum colours with shocking, silver spray-painted hair that was swept up and out of the way in the front and tucked into inverted French braids in the back. Describing his signature style as “bourgeois with a twist”, the French designer played with both colour and texture to create a play of contrasts with the saccharine sweetness of his clothes.

Iris van Herpen

Having secured her position as one of couture’s most daring experimentalist, Iris van Herpen played with static electricity – literally – on the runway for her spring haute couture show in Paris. And in keeping with the theme, the hair was suitably futuristic – if finger waves were transported to the future, this is exactly how they would look!

Venomous Water: Dior Hypnotic Poison Eau Secrète

I remember my first “grown up” perfume: Poison. By Dior. A dab on the wrist was all it took to complete the transformation from shabby girl to sensual woman. And it had some staying power… the scent would linger for days, even after you scrubbed and scrubbed with soap and water! As I grew older and learnt the art of subtlety, Poison was replaced by Tendre Poison front and centre on my dressing table. Where it remained for years till Dior continued it a while back.

Hypnotic Poison Eau Secrète, Hypnotic Poison Eau Secrete, Dior Hypnotic Poison, Dior, Poison, Hypnotic Poison, Tendre Poison, new perfume from DiorSo, it’s no surprise that I am all excited about Dior’s latest launch – Hypnotic Poison Eau Secrète, which (like every scent of this collection) smells of fatal attraction, extreme sensuality and seduction. However, it doesn’t scream for attention like the Poison of the 1980s… instead, it is an irresistibly alluring blend of succulent citrus, jasmine and orange flower essence for subtle sensuality, femininity and seduction. And, of course, there is that heady shot of vanilla, which is the signature note of the Hypnotic Poison collection.

One spritz on bare skin is all it will take for extreme addiction. You have been warned.

Dior vs Dolce: Battle of the Christmas Videos

Much as I would like to be all cool and edgy, I can’t help falling in love with Dior’s dreamy, pop-up-book-style Christmas video rather than Dolce & Gabbana’s wacky and psychedelic interpretation of season’s greetings.

Dior’s 46-second Christmas greeting is as pretty and fairytale-like as Raf Simons runway creations and includes Van Gogh-like renderings of starry skies, golden snowflakes, ethereal doves, mythical winged horses (Pegasus, anyone?), shimmering trees, chic ice skaters and the famous Dior building on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. The whole video looks like a Christmas dream right out of the 1950s and makes one desperately wish for a pretty present from Dior under the tree this year. Santa, are you listening?

Dolce & Gabbana’s Star Wars-meets-shark tanks extravaganza is more of the grab-you-by-the-neck-and-shake-you-till-you-succumb variety… it makes one wonder whether the stress of those imminent tax evasion trials has driven the designers to experiment with hallucinogenics (just a thought!). But love it or hate it, I do have to concede that they deserve full marks for innovation in a season that lives by cliches!

Which one do you prefer?

Dior’s dazzling eyes

Forget the beautifully cut strapless silk gowns with sheer overlays, the voluminous opera skirts, the swirling puff-ball mini-dresses, the classic-with-a-quirky-twist tuxedoes, pretty daisy embellishments and the pointiest of shoes with curved pin-thin heels… to me today’s Dior Spring-Summer 2013 show was all about just one element – the gorgeous, dramatic, unforgettable eye makeup.

It seems that even as Raf Simons (who is clearly Designer of the Year according to me!) was blending colours, textures, traditions and innovations for his Dior debut at Paris Fashion Week, international makeup artist Pat McGrath was gleefully combining colours, clashing hues, playing with glassy glitter and in general having a ball with her eye shadow palette. The chunky, childlike glitter (not mere sparkles!), vividly coloured crystals and intense pigments were drawn into her signature feline lines (eyes pulled upwards and outwards) for a look that was edgy, grown-up, cheerful and super-fun all at the same time.

And if there is something that past shows have taught me, it’s that when Pat McGrath creates a beauty look, we are all going to be scrambling to recreate it very, very soon. Admittedly, this one may seem a bit too bright but you can easily take it from runway to real life by doing a broad cat’s eye in a bright shade and layering a dash of chunky glitter on the edges or along the lash line. Same aesthetics, less theatre, more wearability in real life. Don’t you think?
