Holy & Holistic: Discovering Ila Skincare

Recently, I chanced upon a gorgeous brand called Ila, which felt fabulously luxuriously blissful against my skin while calling upon ‘vibrational energies’ to soothe the senses. Developed a handful of years back by Denise Leicester, a Brit who came to India and fell in love with it’s culture, traditions and flowers, it offers up a sensual medley of floral and plant extracts, natural mineral oils and Himalayan salt crystals. The word ‘Ila’ comes from the Sanskrit word for ‘earth’ and there is a sacred place in northern India at the confluence of the Sarasvati and Drishdvati rivers known as Ilayaspada, which is considered to be extremely holy.

“Beyond organic”

Ila, Organic, Spa, rose, argan oil, sustainable beauty, eco friendly, chant, India, Himalaya

In keeping with it’s name, Ila is devoted to the ancient practises that respect the sanctity of Mother Earth while calling upon it’s healing energies. According to Denise, “Everything in our products comes from a plant or mineral – nothing else.” But the brand goes even beyond the merely organic – every single ingredient is not only free from synthetic chemicals but is also sourced directly from local producers who cultivate and harvest them in harmony with nature.

Roses that hold an ancient promise

Ila, Organic, Spa, rose, argan oil, sustainable beauty, eco friendly, chant, India, Himalaya

For example, the Rose Damascena from India comes from a family that has been growing and distilling roses for many generations according to centuries-old methods. The water is drawn by solar energy, then mixed with petals in copper vats and heated by natural fire-fuel. The spent petals are fed to the cows, completing a cycle that begins and ends with nature. The end result is a distillate of Rose Otto with a depth and a richness of scent that is so potent, I can smell the fragrance and feel it’s silken touch a full 12 hours after washing the Body Balm for Feeding Skin and Senses off my skin!

Moroccan memories

Ila, Organic, Spa, rose, argan oil, sustainable beauty, eco friendly, chant, India, Himalaya

Similarly, the Argan Oil from Morocco is made by a womans’ co-operative whose skills have been passed on down the Berber generations. It’s crushed, filtered and cold-pressed in the way it always has been, using many hands and just a few simple mechanical aids. Denise and her colleagues eschew middle-men, choosing instead to travel and handpick the “purest sources” themselves, thus laying the foundations for fair trade. The reason? “The purer the source and the process, the purer Ila’s products will be and the more suffused with the earth’s natural healing energy.”

Beauty through chanting?

The products themselves are artisanal and hand-blended in an environment of “peace and purity”, accompanied by the rhythm of energy and balance-imbuing chants in the English countryside. This is to imbue the finished potions with all the pure vibrational energies of nature that work in consonance with therapeutic ingredients “to improve natural beauty through the health and vitality of our skin, to increase well-being through the transforming effects of energy healing, and to connect to a greater sense of inner serenity.”

Ila products have garnered a number of awards and are available at premium outlets across the world (including the Four Seasons Spa in Mumbai, which also offers up terrific spa rituals based around the same,  for the benefit of Indian connoisseurs). Prices normally start at approximately Rs. 2,000 (or 35 British pounds, depending on which part of the world you are based).

Body & Soul: Body Marine Algae Spa Ritual at Mumbai’s Four Seasons

Two hours can seem like a lifetime when you have an overflowing inbox, the phone is ringing off the hook and the to-do list is running to eight pages. But when you are promised a holistic short cut to reverse years of living badly, the temptation is too strong to resist. Getting rid of all the toxins accumulated through months of junk food, alcohol, pollution and little sleep? Lead on!

That’s what has me walking into The Spa at Mumbai’s Four Seasons Hotel, which promises to return you to the world rejuvenated in mind, body and spirit with the two-hour Body Marine Algae Ritual, which combines the centuries-old Kyu Nye massage with an Ila marine algae scrub and body wrap.

The therapy begins with a Kyu Nye massage, which is of Tibetan origin and dates back to almost 5,000 years. Soso, my therapist, explains that the word “Kyu” means to apply oil, while “Nye” means to apply pressure with a variety of movements on specific points of the body that correspond to different problem areas. There’s no pummeling, just rhythmical silky touches that are perfect for spa-goers who are not too fond of the “no pain, no gain” philosophy. Then come hot poultices, whose potent benefits work their way deep into the muscles and invigorate the chakras. I am floating blissfully half an hour into the treatment, all thoughts of urban chaos having faded deep into the background.

Oiled and heated, the body is ready for the blissful Himalayan salt crystal scrub, which comes from rock deposits that are hundreds of millions of years old. Its high mineral content, I am told, not only detoxifies the body and banishes dead skin cells but also boost the energy field and immune system while dispelling the aura of negativity that leads to your feeling run down and drained of energy. Since that sounds like a good description of my overall state, I lie back and let Soso do her work.

A quick shower later (there is an en suite bathroom so there is no traipsing up and down the corridors), it’s time to be cocooned in an organic Marine Algae Gel Wrap. Accompanied by lymphatic drainage and marma therapy, it results in increased vitality and well-being, detoxification, improved circulation, reduction of cellulite and greatly improved skin tone. While I am cozily cocooned from neck to foot, Soso goes to work on my face, using a special blend of active sea ingredients that act as a natural face-lift by plumping the skin, purifying, cleansing and reducing puffiness. What makes these treatments so effective is that sea minerals are isotonic, which means they are a perfect fit with the chemical makeup of the body, so they are absorbed easily and effectively. And that’s not all – all products are artisanal and hand blended in accompaniment to energy and balance-imbuing chants that enhance their efficacy. In keeping with the philosophy of Ila Spa, there are no synthetic chemicals and all the ingredients are directly sourced from local producers who work in harmony with nature.

Two hours later, I emerge from the cocoon to the soft chimes of a Tibetan Singing Bowl (which delivers healing energies), feeling lighter and ready to take on the world. What else could a girl want?

Spaaaah: Ila Kundalini Back Massage at the Four Seasons

The Ritual: Ila Kundalini Back Massage, 75 minutes, Rs. 4,200

The Location: The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai

It starts off with the peal of a temple bell and leads into the rhythmic chant of sacred verses. There is no jarring note and no jolt of pain. The ingredients are “beyond organic”; every movement is unhurried and gentle. Designed to soothe mind, body and soul, this treatment is testimony to the fact that pain and gain are not always interlinked – the latter is quite possible without the former, thank you very much! The ritual is built around Ila Skincare, which calls upon ‘vibrational energies’ to soothe, relax and balance the nervous system. Developed by Denise Leicester, a Brit who came to India and fell in love with its culture, traditions and flowers, it offers up a medley of floral and plant extracts, natural mineral oils and salt crystals. There are no synthetic chemicals and all the ingredients are directly sourced from local producers who work in harmony with nature. For example, the Rose Damascena comes from a farmer in the Himalayas, who grows and distills roses according to centuries-old methods. The water is drawn by solar energy, then mixed with petals in copper vats and heated by natural fire-fuel. The end result is a distillate of Rose Otto with a depth and richness that is so potent, I can smell the fragrance and feel its silken touch a full 12 hours after washing it off. All the products are artisanal and hand blended in accompaniment to energy and balance-imbuing chants that enhance their efficacy.

The treatment encompasses everything from the tips of my toes to the scalp. There’s no pummeling, just rhythmical touches, the idea being to clear blockages in the lymphatic system, which lie just below the skin, trapping toxins before they penetrate the blood stream. It calls on sensuous Kundalini oil (a blend of patchouli, neroli, jasmine, coriander) and relaxing Himalayan herb and salt poultices; all strokes are accompanied by chants that correspond to the various chakras being worked upon at that time. It’s all very gentle and the true effects start manifesting themselves a little while after the treatment is over. Half an hour later, I am completely spaced out and have to grab the seat to check that it only feels like an out-of-body experience. I am fast asleep halfway back home, and slumber blissfully through the night for the first time in months!
