This is what Shiseido looked like in 1897

115 years is a long time for a skincare product to stick around but that’s the marvel of Shiseido’s Eudermine Revitalizing Essence – one of the oldest beauty products available on the retail shelves, albeit in an advanced formulation.

Shiseido, Eudermine, limited edition, 140 anniversary, 1897, Eudermine 1897

Eudermine – a name derived from the Greek words for “good” (eu) and “skin” (derma) was created in 1897, based on the research of Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai from the Imperial University of Tokyo. It was Shiseido’s first cosmetic product (this is the only cosmetics company that started in pharmaceuticals) and the ruby red skin softening lotion originally came in a late-Victorian style bottle with eight cut facets and an ultra-feminine, flower-emblazoned label.

In Japanese skincare, Eudermine took the place of “cosmetic water” – the first step of a beauty routine to moisturise and hydrate the complexion, usually followed by a “milky lotion” that “locks” water into the skin. Sounds a tad complicated I know, but would you argue with the women who, as a nation, have the most gorgeous skin in the world?

Which brings me to the fact that Eudermine is not a “toner” in the commonly used sense of the word. Rather, it performs like a lotion – smoothing and moisturising the complexion with a formula that responds to changes in the climate, keeping skin hydrated regardless of location or season. I normally bring it out when my skin is reeling from a stressful period, breaking out in red spots and dry spots. Eudermine normalises every irregularity with its thick, gelatinous consistency. It’s as soft as silk and leaves my skin feeling clean, cool and balanced. An added bonus: it smells like rain-washed peonies.

The changing face of Shiseido’s Eudermine over the decades

Little wonder then that this ”Red Water” (dubbed so for its scarlet containers) continues to be a bestseller worldwide. The current bottle– a minimalistic red flacon with a small spherical cap – was designed in 1997 by Serge Lutens to mark Eudermine’s 100-year anniversary. The name is written on the label using an angular font with a symmetrically mirrored coupling of the letters that makes them look like Japanese ideograms.

However, if you would rather have the old school original from 1897, good news is at hand: Shiseido turns 140-years-old this year and to commemorate its anniversary the brand is reissuing the apothecary-style, 115-year-old bottle in a limited edition (US$60). And that’s not all: the retro flacon also comes with a set of limited-edition blotting papers that are currently available only in Japan. Plus, the outer carton is dressed up with an illustration by Ayao Yamana, a legendary Shiseido designer from the 60s and 70s.

I am hoping they will re-issue other products and packaging designs from decades past, allowing us to experience the brand’s heritage. “Heritage” is a term that’s really overused these days but Shiseido has actually earned it!

Vaseline and champagne?

Vaseline is injecting a little glamour into its classic Lip Therapy with a Pink Bubbly version. The chic pink-and-black tin has been designed by Hornall Anderson and comes in a limited edition. The balm itself has a gorgeous rosé hue and is enriched with Champagne grape extract to soften lips – and it tastes like the real thing but won’t give you a hangover the next day. Utterly decadent, don’t you think? Price: £3.49

Not just for lips

Incidentally, Vaseline is such a diverse product that you can use it for a whole range of things. Here are some of my favourite ways of working it, gleaned from picking the brains of leading beauty professionals over many, many years:

1. Eye makeup remover: A dab of Vaseline can remove even the most stubborn mascara while soothing the eye area – just massage it in gently and wash off with warm water.

2. Body scrub: Vaseline mixed with a handful of sea salt (or sand, if you are on the beach and want to make like the Brazilians) works as a great exfoliator.

3. Lip scrub: Apply a thick layer of Vaseline to your lips and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub it off with an old (gentle) toothbrush for fabulously soft and smooth lips.

4. Manicure mender: Dabbing a bit of Vaseline on the base of your nails will stop the colour from running onto the fingers.

5. Shaving: Run out of shaving cream? Apply a thin layer of Vaseline and then shave. Don’t use water and remember to keep rinsing the razor as you go. This can be a slightly greasy affair but it will leave you with superbly soft, smooth and moisturised skin.

6. Highlighter: Professional makeup artists do this all the time, especially during catwalk shows – apply a very thin layer of Vaseline on cheeks and under the eyes for that dewy look.

7. Cream blusher: Want a rosy flush? Mix vaseline with your lipstick to make your own cream blusher.

8. Fragrance fixer: Applying a thin layer of vaseline on your wrist (and other pulse points) before spraying on perfume will make the scent last much longer.

9. Protect skin from hair dye: Every hair colourist worth their name knows this one – you need to apply a layer of Vaseline around the hairline before colouring your hair. This not only prevents stains but also protects skin from the harsh chemicals in the dye.

10. Seals split ends: While nothing can mend split ends, rubbing in some Vaseline can temporarily seal them, creating the illusion of sleek, damage-free hair.

Bet you didn’t know this!

Last year, Vaseline’s limited edition Crème Brûlée was the fastest selling product in Selfridges’ entire history!

Estee Lauder’s Jewelled Flag of Britain

Just back from London, skipped wishing Her Majesty the Queen (am sure she must be devastated but I have just this much time after all!) for the Diamond Jubilee, passed up on dear ol’ Kate & William and spent the entire three days SHOPPING!!!! How could I not, with all the super-gorgeous beauty treats up for grabs in honour of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne?

Estee Lauder, Jewelled Flag of Britain, Beautiful, perfume, fragrance, limited edition, queen, london, diamond jubilee

Still unpacking the bags but simply had to show you this ultra-scrumptious gold-plated solid perfume compact from Estee Lauder. It’s called Jewelled Flag of Britain, has been handcrafted by fine jewellers and decorated with 130 Swarovski Elements. Inside is one of my favourite Estee Lauder perfumes – Beautiful – which unveils a romantic blend of Queen-worthy notes like lily, cassis and tuberose (I have it on good authority that the latter is, in fact, one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite florals).

The cost? £320. Yes, certainly not cheap but it’s really, really gorgeous and how many times does a Royal Jubilee come around anyway? If you want this royal souvenir, head over to Estee Lauder and buy it NOW! This one’s not going to stick around for long. I picked up the second-to-last piece at Harrods on Sunday, so am sure it’s sold out there by now!

Happy Birthday Big Ben!

Somewhere during all the hoopla of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, one of London’s oldest icons quietly turned 153-years-old on May 31st. I am talking about the Big Ben: The biggest four-faced, chiming clock in the world that’s one of the most recognizable structures in London and represents the city, just like the Eiffel Tower represents Paris.

But the beauty industry did not forget – and here are two gorgeous limited edition products that honour Big Ben’s marvellous legacy. Can you resist?
