Beauty Secrets of the Ancient Geishas

Every time I travel to Japan, my skin develops an inferiority complex. I mean, have you ever seen those Japanese women with their smooth, glowing, absolutely flawless skin? There is not a single blemish or an enlarged pore to be seen anywhere. And this time it was even worse, considering that I was in Kanazawa to meet with one of the greatest cultural icons of all times: an honest-to-goodness geisha. One of those magical superwomen who can seduce with a downward glance, fascinate with her silent sensuality and entrance with a flick of the wrist. And then there is that unbelievably smooth, porcelain-like skin, glossy hair and ruby red lips that are unrivalled across the world.

So, this time I decided to tackle the eternal question: what are the secret skincare and haircare recipes that make geishas so beautiful, so ageless and so dazzling? There really just a few of them and they can be incorporated in daily life to get those results.

geisha-beauty-secretsSea Salt

Since Japan sits on the waters, it makes sense that sea salt would be a part of the geisha’s skincare routine. Salt is a wonderful body scrub, while also being terrific for cellulite. However, unlike us mere mortals who mix it with oil, the Japanese geishas prefer whipped cream. Follow suit by blending 2 tablespoons of sea salt with a little whipped cream to create a body scrub. Massage in circular motions over warm skin, preferably halfway through a shower. Finally, rinse and finish off with body lotion. Massaging with sea salt breaks down fat and makes skin firm and smooth. Easy, ain’t it?

Rice Bran

The chemical composition of rice bran is similar to that of human skin. Add to this its potent water retaining and exfoliating abilities and you can see why this husky flour has been a skincare staple of the geishas since 1100 AD. An added bonus: while other scrubs can tear and damage the skin cells, rice bran leaves them rejuvenated, cleansed and healthy. For the best results, mix 1 tablespoon of rice bran flour with enough milk or yoghurt to form a smooth paste. Apply this to warm, freshly cleansed skin and leave on till dry (approximately 10 minutes). After that, remove the mask using warm water and circular motions of your fingertips. Pat dry and apply your usual skincare.

Rice

The beauty benefits of rice have been treasured for hundreds of years by women not only in Japan but also in Indonesia and other Asian countries. That’s because rice is rich in gamma-oryzanol – a powerful antioxidant that boosts collagen production. The most popular rice mask involves powdering 2 tablespoons of rice in a coffee grinder. Mix this rice flour with 1 tablespoon of whipped cream. Apply this paste to your face and neck; rinse after 20 minutes.

Persimmon

Known as the fruit of the Gods in ancient Greece, persimmon contains calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, iodine and super-high levels of vitamins. Japan’s geishas understood the multifaceted benefits of this fruit and used it in many different ways – from face masks to skin tonics and detox diets. A favorite recipe: mix 1 tablespoon of mashed persimmon with 1 teaspoon each of honey and egg yolk. Apply to clean skin and leave for 15-20 minutes before washing off with warm water. This face mask will hydrate, nourish and protect against environmental damage.

Green Tea

Green tea is loaded with polyphenols, which fight free radicals, reduce skin inflammation, provide protection against skin cancer and bust any nasty toxins or bacteria that may be lingering in your pores. Geishas are famous for their elaborate tea ceremonies, often involving green tea, but it is a less widely known fact that they use that very same tea to keep their skin glowing and gorgeous. How? Boil, strain and cool 1 cup of green tea. To this, add 1/2 cup ground oats, 1 tablespoon avocado oil or mashed avocado and 10 drops lemon juice. Mix the ingredients into a paste that you apply on clean face. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then remove with washcloth and lukewarm water. Do this twice a week for skin that absolutely radiates its flawless perfection.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The enzyme-rich apple cider vinegar literally melts away dead skin cells. Which is why geishas add it to their shampoo to prevent dandruff and stimulate hair growth. They also add it to the bath to keep their skin young and healthy. Follow in their footsteps by mixing organic apple cider vinegar in the ratio of 1:1, soaking a cotton pad in the mixture and patting it onto your skin. Leave on skin for 5-7 minutes, then wash off with plain water. The result? Clean and fresh new skin.

Camellia Oil

Japanese women have known for centuries about the wonderful haircare benefits of camellia oil. It is exceptionally high in oleic acids, proteins and glycerides that are perfect for maintaining hair health, as well as adding volume and gloss. And using it is super-simple: lightly heat 1 teaspoon of camellia oil and rub it along the length and tips of wet hair. Then cover your strands with a towel for 20 minutes. Finally, shampoo your hair and rinse well; condition as usual.

Pumpkin-spiced beauty recipes

‘Tis the season of the pumpkin. They are being carved up for Halloween and soon they’ll make their way into decadent desserts and soothing stews. However, while pumpkins look, smell and taste delicious, they’re even more effective as a natural skin care ingredient. This autumnal icon is high in many nutrients that are as good for the outside of your body as they are for the inside.

Vitamin A (retinol): Acts as a potent cleanser and antioxidant that arrests free radicals, which damage skin cells. As a bonus, it soothes and softens all skin types, even sensitive ones.

Vitamin C: Another powerful antioxidant, this vitamin preserves the health of skin cells.

Vitamin E: This is also an active antioxidant that works as a powerful healer and skin soothing element.

Potassium: Regulates the water content in cells and thus applying it on your skin remedies water retention that causes unwanted puffiness.

Zinc: Helps soothe irritated skin.

Alpha-hydroxy acids: Gently exfoliate dead skin cells, draw out impurities and revitalise the skin.

The synergy of all of these nutrients means that pumpkins are a natural and healthy way to care for your skin, including tackling premature aging, sun spots, clogged pores, and a dull, uneven complexion. So, here are six simple pumpkin-based skincare recipes that will do wonders for your epidermis.

But first… how to make the pumpkin puree

Most of these recipes ask for pumpkin puree and here’s an easy way to make this essential beauty ingredient:

  1. pumpkin, spa, beauty recipe, skin, skincare, pumpkin puree, autumn skincare, honey, cinnamon, pumpkin latte, recipe, pumpkin skincare benefits, pumpkin benefits, pumpkin healthSlice open the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds.
  2. Cut the pumpkin into large (approximately 2 inch) cubes.
  3. Throw the cubes into your biggest cooking pot and cover with water like you would potatoes. For a beauty recipe, you don’t need to add any seasonings – in this case, the plainer the better.
  4. Boil, covered, for at least an hour but check at the 30 minute mark. You want the pumpkin pieces to be fork-tender.
  5. Once cooked, remove the pieces from the pot. Drop a few pieces at a time (with the peel) in a blender. Add some water from the pot for extra liquid. Blend to an even consistency. Let the orangey puree cool to room temperature before applying it to your skin.
As a shortcut, you can resort to canned pumpkin puree but fresh is always best.

Pumpkin facial scrub

½ cup pumpkin pureed
3 tablespoons organic sugar
½ teaspoon pumpkin seed oil

Combine the ingredients in a small bowl and mix together to make a thick paste. Apply it on your face and gently scrub using circular motions. Rinse off after 2 minutes with lukewarm water.

Pumpkin Pie Face Mask

2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 tablespoon honey (preferably raw or organic)
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon powder
Optional: ¼ teaspoon heavy whipping cream (for dry skin)
Optional: ¼ teaspoon cranberry juice or raw apple cider vinegar (for oily skin)

First, combine the pumpkin puree, honey and cinnamon powder in a small bowl. Then, if you want, add the cream, cranberry juice or apple cider vinegar depending on your skin type. Blend the mixture into a smooth paste and apply a thin layer of it onto your face, avoiding the eye area. After 15 minutes, wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry. The pumpkin and cinnamon invigorate and exfoliate, while the honey acts as a humectant.

Sweet pumpkin body scrub

¼ cup pumpkin puree
¼ cup brown sugar

Combine both the ingredients in a small bowl. Apply the mixture to your body using a damp cloth. Scrub using circular motions and wash off with warm water. The enzymes in this simple sugar scrub will slough dead winter skin right off your body.

Pumpkin latte body masque

2 tablespoons strong coffee
2 tablespoons cream or milk
½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (optional)
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon vanilla
¼ cup sugar (raw sugar works especially well)

Blend everything, except the sugar, in a bowl. Add the sugar and blend very gently. (If this mix seems too dry and crumbly, add a bit more pumpkin; if it seems too runny, add more sugar.) Apply the masque all over your body and leave on for 15-20 minutes to allow all the nutrients to soak into your skin, then rinse well. Pumpkins and coffee are both high in antioxidants, while the caffeine also helps tighten and firm skin naturally. Sugar is great at exfoliating, and the spices make it smell great!

Drink up (a pina colada!) for beautiful skin

My skin hates me at the moment :( But with six weeks of continuous travelling, layers of makeup melting into every pore in the summer heat, three hours of sleep a night (if I am lucky) and loads of junk food, even I have to admit that it has good reason to pout and rebel. What I do hate though is its way of showing displeasure – zits like I haven’t had since the age of 14 in places where I never had them even when I was 14, blotchy patches that make any kind of cover-up crease and crumble, skin that looks grey and lifeless. Ugh!

perricone, smoothie, skin, pina colada, recipe, skincare, summerSo, it’s time to make amends and when the legendary Dr. Perricone started talking of a recipe that combines Pina Colada delectableness with loads of skin soothing benefits, how could I resist? A quick trip to the market and 10 minutes in the kitchen later, I can honestly vouch for its deliciousness. The skin benefits, I assume, will take a little more time to show up but when they do, Dr. Perricone promises hydration, an Omega buzz that ups detoxification, boosts blood circulation and raises energy levels, and medium-chain fatty acids that make the complexion glow. In the long term, this coconut-almond-and-avocado-concoction is also supposed to help lose weight, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. And yup, you can enjoy this healthy cocktail virgin (or not – I definitely did nothing of the sort!).

Ingredients

  • Half a cup of unsweetened almond milk

  • Dash of vanilla extract
  • 2-4 ice cubes
  • Half a cup of water
  • Rum to taste (optional)
