These are my six defining touch points for evaluating a skincare product. And the reformulated Jurlique Nutri-Define Supreme range – that aims to tackle issues like signs of premature ageing (think fine lines and loss of firmness), dark spots and inflammation – ranks on each one of them. Which is something that rarely happens. And which is why we are talking all things Jurlique Nutri-Define today!
It’s a well known fact that I prefer my skincare labels not to read like a chemistry experiment. Been there, done that… had the skin damage to show for it.
At the same time, I don’t like gobbledygook either.
Products that upsell their benefits based on a bunch of randomly thrown together ingredients. Or ones that greenwash. My idea of the perfect brand is one that’s safe on the skin, sustainable for the environment and rooted in scientific research. Too much to ask for?
Jurlique doesn’t think so. And it’s core beliefs go right back to the brand’s beginnings in 1985, when Jurgen (a biochemist and naturopath) and Ulrike (a horticulturalist and botanist specialising in healing herbs) created their original skincare formulas. Their guiding principle: To prove that nothing manufactured solely in a laboratory could rival the healing powers of nature.
Today, all Jurlique ingredients are grown and handpicked on their own organic and biodynamic farm in Adelaide, South Australia. They also follow a patented Bio-Intrinsic method that extracts the goodness in its most potent, vibrant version from the plants.
Seed to skin at it’s finest, with an almost spiritual aspect!
Take the spilanthes flower, which forms one of the cornerstones of the Nutri-Define lineup. Grown in the Jurlique greenhouse, it’s harvested exclusively on days when the moon passes through the “Air” and “Light” signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius.
Gobbledygook? Hardly. Every traditional school of healing, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, holds that there is an optimum time to harvest every plant. A time when it is at maximum potency and filled with vital energies.
Even the flower growers of Grasse, the perfume capital of France, harvest their blooms at specific times – like jasmine, which is picked only from dawn to noon as the volatile oil in the flowers decrease with the heat of the day.
Jurlique Nutri-Define: The ingredients
So, back to spilanthes. And the other ingredients of Jurlique’s Nutri-Define range.
Spilanthes, a unique flower native to Brazil, promotes skin’s collagen production by up to a whopping 46%. Plus, it’s astringent, which helps tone the skin and visibly reduce the appearance of pores. Spilanthes also has antioxidant benefits, soothing the skin and protecting it against environmental damage.
Nutri-Define products get a double boost of antioxidants and collagen-boosters with the addition of horseradish root extract to step up skin’s firmness and elasticity.
Then there are calendula flowers – those gorgeous blooms that work like a salve to soothe dry or dehydrated skin, restoring its elasticity, softness and hydration for a lit-from-within glow. Calendula extract is also antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and helps bust the signs of premature ageing, like hyperpigmentation and fine lines.
Lavender – one of my favorite botanicals – is another key ingredient, with a healing profile that includes a ton of antiseptic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory goodness.
Add in marshmallow root – a powerful humectant that draws water into the skin’s cells leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth, plump and hydrated.
And how can I not mention the rose extracts, which are packed with vitamins, fatty acids and polyphenols to soothe and purify the skin, while also being nourishing and rejuvenating.
All of these combine to make Jurlique’s Nutri-Define range the perfect option for skin that is dealing with signs of premature ageing, looking lacklustre, needs nourishing and could do with a blockbuster radiance boost. And they are lush formulas that feel sensorially luxe, transforming skincare into that much coveted selfcare moment that we all need to soothe our entire being.
Jurlique Nutri-Define: The technology
However, all the powerful ingredients in the world are wasted if you cannot actually get them into the skin. That’s where delivery mechanisms come in – technologies that drive all the goodness into the skin’s layers rather than just have them sitting on top, doing zilch.
So, say hello to Biosome6 – a delivery system unique to Jurlique. The name itself is a sum of “bio”dynamic farming + lipo”some” + the 6 key ingredients.
Biosome6 uses the power of liposomes – tiny micro-capsules that have the same chemical makeup as a cell membrane, allowing them to absorb deeper and faster. Each micro-capsule penetrates beneath the skin’s surface, where it disperses all the goodness of the ingredients. Liposomes were originally deployed in the 1980s to deliver medicinal drugs into the human body. Impressive, right?
Jurlique Nutri-Define: The products
Which brings me to the actual products – there are five in the Nutri-Define Supreme lineup, including a Cleansing Foam, Rejuvenating Serum, Eye Contour Balm, Restorative Light Cream and Restorative Rich Cream.
The Cleansing Foam has sprinklings of jojoba microbeads that makes for gentle exfoliation. I have been using it as the second part of my double-cleanse every night and the cream-to-foam texture completely hits the mark, leaving skin feeling clean and yet not dry or squeaky (the latter is NOT a good thing!).
To me, it’s the lightly scented Rejuvenating Serum that’s the big hero product here. This lightweight gel that feels like a huge drink of water for my skin. The formula feels cooling and sinks in quickly. It also wears very well under makeup and I have been multi-tasking it as a primer. Whenever I apply it, my skin immediately feels more glow-y, smooth and plump – which is is what good skin dreams are made of!
However, the real, long term benefits, started kicking in around the one-week mark, when my skin started looking more refined, brighter, firmer and clearer… enough for my husband to remark upon, which NEVER happens (yes, it seems we have been married for way too long)!
Since my skin errs on the oilier side, I have been scooping up the Restorative Light Cream. The gel-cream formula is light enough that I feel my skin can breathe and nourishing enough to leave it looking smooth and hydrated. My skin sucks it up almost instantly, leaving no tackiness or greasiness in its wake.
I might switch to the Restorative Rich Cream in the colder months, which is a great option for skin that’s dry or lacking in luminosity. It also offers the perfect slip for a gorgeously indulgent face massage, so it’s definitely in rotation on my vanity.
And all products come in gorgeous rose gold glass bottles (no plastic, thank you!) which are both stunning and eco-friendly. Which is a big thing in my book.
At the end of it all is the question I know you are going to ask me: Is the Jurlique Nutri-Define Supreme Range worth the investment?
I definitely think so. It’s great for skin that needs a boost. Skin that’s looking for a dose of nourishing goodness. Skin that’s showing signs of premature ageing, like fine lines, loss of elasticity, uneven texture or hyperpigmentation. Skin that’s subject to chronic inflammation. Skin that’s dehydrated or exposed to environmental stressors like the sun and pollution. Skin that lacks radiance or hydration. In short, this is the perfect lineup to take years off your face!
So yes, if this fits your skin profile I would definitely recommend the investment.
In the meantime, excuse me while I try and pour some of this goodness onto the rest of my life.
Have you tried anything from Jurlique before? How was the experience? Would love some recommendations.
