Every time I smell something by Narciso Rodriguez, it challenges so much of what I have learnt about perfumes in the past decade. And his latest launch – Narciso Rodriguez For Her L’Eau – is no different. After all, when you see “l’eau” (“water”) on a perfume label, what comes to mind immediately? Crisp citrus, marine freshness and lots of sparkle? Not for Narciso Rodriguez, who once again completely subverts traditional thought by foregoing the citrus and opening with a pretty floral blend instead. The result? A couture l’eau that’s both fresh and glam at the same time. Not an easy feat, believe me.
This is completely in keeping with the Narciso Rodriguez tradition – after all, didn’t he revolutionise the modern chypre with the original For Her’s signature musk way back in 2003? In fact, that first perfume continues to weave through all the later incarnations from this eponymous label, including L’Eau. But while the original is warm, heavy and sensual, this new fragrance leans more towards a soft and innocent femininity that’s weekend-worthy as well as daytime friendly and perfect for signature office wear. It’s something I would imagine Grace Kelley wearing. Or Jackie O.
It’s still the Narciso we know and love but with fresh new notes that include lily of the valley and rose alongside sparkling pink peony, jasmine and cyclamen. The musk has been toned down and the result is a softer, lighter, quieter scent. One that still tickles and seduces but more subtly. It doesn’t shout out loud, preferring instead to stay close to your skin… much like a soft, luxurious silk slip. Which, to me, is the most sensuous sensation ever.
And it’s not just the fragrance that’s been given a more laid back feel. Narciso Rodriguez For Her L’eau is housed in a subtle-yet-glam bottle whose sleek lines and pale pink glass are as sheer and luminous as its contents. The overall effect: a brighter, more delicate and spontaneous version of the famously feminine and sensual perfume. If you are a fan of the original but have often wished to have a lighter version – or love soft, musky florals – you will love this scent. So, take a sniff. And then tell me what you think. I would love to hear your thoughts.
