I absolutely and completely love the rains but do bemoan what they do to my hair, skin and makeup – frizzy strands, greasy complexion and runaway mascaras definitely don’t make for an appealing look! That’s why, I have spent the last month picking the brains of top beauty gurus and retail counter specialists to create this essential monsoon toolkit that should solve all beauty woes this season. All these have been personally tried and examined from every angle.
There is nothing that spells monsoon agony like frizzy hair – and if yours are like mine, going haywire with just a couple of raindrops, it’s time to look up T3’s Pro Dryer. This hot pink beauty is powered by the brand’s patented tourmaline technology (tourmaline is a semi-precious gem that gives off ionic energy when heated), for shiny, smooth, frizz-free locks in half the drying time offered by anyone else.
There is no better way to tame wild frizz into submission that with a hair straightener that makes the cuticles of every strand lie flat, so tresses look smooth and shiny. Here, the gold standard is undeniably GHD’s IV Styler, whose advanced ceramic heaters can control even the thickest tresses.
And then there is John Frieda’s Frizz Ease 3-Day Straight – a semi-permanent styling spray whose proprietary blend of polymers with keratin protein wraps each strand, sealing in straight styles for up to three days. A Godsend!
Next stop: Skincare. And here, the one product I can’t live without during the monsoon is Clinique’s Clarifying Lotion. It’s simply the best at degreasing the skin and opening up your pores, which usually fall victim to complexion-defying dullness during the rains, leading to ghastly zits and dull, greasy faces unless dealt with on a daily basis.
The urban rains, which deposit a fine layer of atmospheric pollutants on our skin, require a special brand of cleansing that’s tough on the grime and grease, while being gentle on the complexion. The solution? Cleansing oils. The best option? Shu Uemura’s High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Fresh.
Even greasy skin needs a moisturiser but most would do well to switch to an oil-free version – like Clarins’ Ultra-Matte Rebalancing Lotion, whose Alpine Willow Herb, White Dead Nettle and Zinc control shine and regulate the oil production while providing hydration.
There is nothing more ugh-inducing than runny, streaky foundation flowing off your face in clumps. Alternative? Switch to a tinted moisturiser, which gets absorbed into the skin with only a fine layer of pigments on the skin, leaving little scope for a rainy day disaster. Two to try: Clinique’s Moisture Sheer Tint SPF 15 and MAC’s Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15.
The thickest cloud cover can’t stop the damaging effects of the sun from reaching your skin (remember, if there is enough natural light to read a book, the sun is strong enough to destroy your skin) so you need a good sunscreen. Bonus points for a high SPF, waterproof, oil-free variety – like Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 55.
Not fond of racoon eyes or rivulets of black running down your face? Repeat after me – I WILL ONLY USE WATERPROOF MASCARA THIS SEASON. Good. Now head out and stock up on Lancome’s Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara or Estee Lauder’s Sumptuous Waterproof Bold Volume Lifting Mascara for the ultimate in rainy day glamour!
Eyes, lips, cheeks – all are taken care of with Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream, which is easy to blend, comes in a whole rainbow of colours and won’t budge even under the most extreme conditions.
