It’s day 7389753957 of the lockdown and I have not put on a smidgen of makeup during this time. Not kidding. Yes, not even for Zoom calls. My philosophy: Take me for what I am, or watch me as I leave!
And this is my personal preference, not a blanket statement… for some people putting on makeup is self care. For me, happiness comes from my skincare rituals and I am totally dedicated to those right now.
Plus, I am taking this time to give my hair some TLC. My last haircut was almost three months before the pandemic, so it looks like a hot mess. However, I’m not at all confident about picking up the scissors myself, so will wait and try to nurture my strands as much as I can on my own – whether with homemade masks or the products that otherwise gather dust on my shelves, due to my once-a-fortnight salon indulgence.
So, now that the ray of light that’s the Sephora Spring Sale is here, you can see which side I am skewing in my picks. These are either products that I am using and absolutely loving currently, or the ones that I have run out of and need to stock up on asap. In short, this edit of my Sephora Spring Sale picks is what I personally use and love. Because we could all do with some comfort and cheer in our lives just now. Right?
So, the Sephora Spring sale. Here are the deets:
- Sephora Rouge members have first access to shop the online event at a whopping 20% off with code SPRINGSAVE (April 17 – May 1)
- VIB members get 15% off event purchases online with code SPRINGSAVE from April 21 – April 29
- Insider members get 10% off event purchases online, again with code SPRINGSAVE from April 23 – April 27 (you can sign up for free at any time to become an Insider)
And here are my top picks:
Welleco Super Elixir Greens
You already know I love Welleco’s Super Elixir Greens, right? The combination of 45 cold pressed bio-live ingredients (including kelp, turmeric, aloe vera, shiitake mushrooms, barley grass, psyllium husk, and grape seed extract) is full of alkalising vitamins, minerals and probiotics, which take care of my acidity, heartburn and other digestion issues in two scoops a day. I end up bagging big bags of this green powder whenever and wherever there’s a sale. Hot tip: The original flavour tastes a bit like mud, so reserve it for smoothies where its taste gets camouflaged. The Lemon & Ginger flavour is what you want when having it neat!
Lord Jones Acid Mantle Repair Moisturizer
Our skin’s acid mantle is what keeps everything beneath it safe and healthy. Compromise this natural barrier (with sun exposure, pollutants, stress, harsh skincare and the like!) and there is inflammation, itching, stinging, redness and flakiness. And it doesn’t stop there – a compromised acid mantle can’t protect the skin against infections, so you’re looking at some pretty hefty long term damage.
Lord Jones’ new Acid Mantle Repair Moisturizer harnesses the power of full spectrum CBD (read about why that works here) along with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and squalene to repair this natural barrier quickly and effectively. Apply this lightweight cream when you need immediate relief (it calmed down my wind chapped skin within a couple of hours) or when your complexion needs a sustained treatment. I am keeping a jar handy at all times from now on!
This. Is. My. Favorite. Hydrator. Of. All. Time. And anyone who reads this blog know that by now! The gel-like formula feels like a sprinkler for bare skin, thanks to the encapsulated water droplets. And it hydrates like nothing else! Right now, Tatcha has a limited edition version to commemorate funding 4 million days of school with Room to Read. It’s 75ml for $80 and dressed with pretty cherry blossoms (the normal 50ml clocks in at $68). Take another 10-20% off and you’ve got a steal to stock up on!
Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask
This has quickly become one of my favorite soothing, cooling and nourishing masks. I talk about it at length here!
Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment
This lactic acid powered chemical peel is gentle enough to be left on overnight and potent enough to smooth away dead cells while also tackling acne, enlarged pores, sun damage, hyperpigmentation and fine lines. It also plumps up the skin for a dewy glow. If only there was a way to pour it over the rest of my life!
Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks
I work on digital screens A LOT. Which means my eyes are perpetually tired, puffy and itchy. When I first came across these gold foiled eye masks in my quest to soothe the irritation, they simply seemed to be Instagram bait. But after using them quite a lot for the past couple of years, I’ve found that the gold is not just decorative.
In the Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks, it retains heat when applied under the eyes, helping the aloe leaf extract, hyaluronic acid and lavender oil-infused serum to absorb more efficiently. The result? A perfect pick-me-up for tired peepers, dark circles and puffiness.
Love having a glossy tan but hate being out in the sun, like me? Tan-Luxe is perfect for bronzing without the burn even for newbie self tanners as you can control how dark you want to go. AND there’s rarely any streakiness or blotchiness.
I would recommend starting off with 3-4 drops per body area and building up from there till you get the desired level of tan. Mix into a rich body cream and apply over freshly exfoliated skin for the smoothest results!
Clean Reserve Radiant Nectar EDP
If you want to do some good while smelling fabulous, the Clean Reserve Radiant Nectar fragrance is a win-win! This limited edition fragrance smells like summer (think refreshing notes of pear nectar layered with ambrette seeds and drying down to a sensual musk) and helps support the Protect Our Species campaign to help protect endangered bees.
Plus, it’s crafted with responsibly-sourced ingredients and wrapped in eco-conscious packaging to minimize the impact on the planet!
Drunk Elephant TLC Happi Scalp Scrub
While Drunk Elephant’s new hair line has a lot of good stuff, the TLC Happi Scalp Scrub is my personal favorite. There are a lot of scalp scrubs in the market but they work largely with physical exfoliation – like using sugar or salt granules to give a mechanical rub down to scalp skin. While this is not bad, I prefer chemical exfoliation, which has less chance of causing micro tears in the skin and gets really deep into the pores, purging dead cells and other grime. Happi Scalp uses a 10% AHA blend to dissolve build-up and adds in Marula oil to calm and nourish the fragile skin on our scalp, which is crucial for healthy hair.
Kerastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum
I’ve been sitting on this hair treatment for a while… wary that it would kill my blow dries! Now that we are sitting at home with nowhere to go, I started working it into my strands and there can be no going back.
The serum sinks in almost immediately, so there’s no greasiness or transfer to pillowcases (or skin!). And it genuinely makes my hair feel silky and glossy the next day. It looks more voluminous and there’s less breakage, even though I’ve not had a salon deep treatment in a very, very long time!
As for the blow dry… it does dismantle curls and the work of straightening irons. But it ends up giving my hair a lovely natural wave so that’s good enough for me.
Christophe Robin Volume Shampoo Paste with Rassoul Clay and Rose Extracts
Clay in a shampoo? Yes, I didn’t get it either – till I tried Christophe Robin’s Volume Shampoo Paste, which has to be the most beautiful shampoo formulations I have ever seen! The pure rassoul clay is brilliant at deep cleaning your hair and adding volume, while the rose extracts nourish it into silkiness and leave the behind the most gorgeous fragrance that lasts for days. Plus, the formula turns into a fluffy foam with just a touch of water and rinses out super-clean!
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox Shampoo
This has been another lockdown discovery. I usually have a deep cleansing and nourishing salon treatment every couple of weeks, so don’t find myself reaching out for detox shampoos at home. But now, when my hair started feeling crunchy with all the experimentation it’s going through, this has become my new love! I found a sample while desperately looking for something that would cleanse my strands of buildup and chanced upon tiny tubes of the Triple Detox. And it works brilliantly at cleaning away all product, pollution and hard water residue. My hair has not looked so clean and healthy in a long time.
Couple of caveats though: If your hair is not soaking wet, the shampoo won’t foam well, so add water! And it dries out hair a bot so you will definitely need a hydrating, nourishing conditioner after – I recommend Christophe Robin’s Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Seed Oil!
The many beauty benefits of sleeping on silk pillowcases include better skin hydration, preventing premature ageing and halting hair loss (read more here!). And I can personally testify that Slip is the best in class by far!
